Cant connect...DSL screwed??
« on: October 17, 2006, 01:33:43 AM »
Iv got earthlink DSL and have had it for sometime..and its been great..but now i get spotty connects at best. but when i do connect the DL speeds are nice around 260bps, but then maybe an 30min later...the green light on the modem goes red and thats it. But usually i cant connect at all.

I have all the proper filters on the only phone in the apartment, and the phone works great...even when i use old dial-up to get my email or type this post...connect is good and consistent.

so why is DSL a no go??...if i can connect with normal phone and good ole dial up, then obviously the wires are not an issue.

Of corse when talking to the help desk its difficult to get past the Punjabi accent of the advice guy who does nothing but tell me 'the wiring in your apt is at fault...thanks for calling, bye.'

I dont have cable TV (i spend it on AH). maybe i can get cable service w/o having cable?

what DSL modem you using?  i have sprint DSL too .. and usully the modem does the PPPoE connection on its own.. but i found out it would lag my internet and cause it to start cutting out .. so i bridged the modem and used windows PPPoE to log in..  and never had a problem since then.. also how far are you form the CO .. if your on the fringe of the signal you could get disconnects alot..

Im on DSL now...its working this morning..miracle..huh?

The modem I got from earthlink is a broadmax, so when this all started i thot, 'bad modem', so i go another from a buddy (free) called a speedstream'  Pluggn in the speedstream the probs stopped and funny thing the DL speeds when from 125 to 240bps!!
But after some time, its back to the ole bad connects or no connects. pluggin the BM modem faired no better.

the theory of my distance being a factor doesnt add up, because then my connect would be spotty from the start...unless they moved the CO during my time of use!

this windows PPoE...where i get info?

not sure about the speedstream modem.. i use a xylex 645m .. so not sure about the configuration.. you can try a goggle search for "bridged DSL" and the model number of your modem and see if that doesnt give you a walk through on how to put it into bridged mode .. and then the PPPoE in windows is just clicking setting up a new connection in network folder and putting in your info
