Aces High Bulletin Board Broken?
« on: July 17, 2000, 08:44:00 PM »
The folder icons next to threads are always off (like I've never visited this site) or all on (like every thread contains something new).  They do not work properly, showing highlighted folders for threads that have been updated since my last visit.

I have tried clearing out my cookies and have also done some system reinstalling (not related to this of course   ) and it always does wierd stuff.  I have no problem with alt.games.warbirds or other Ultimate Bulletin Board powered systems.

Hmm... someone fixed it, or I was hallucinating.

Sigh.  I was using a different computer running Netscape on Linux.  My Win2k IE5 browser is not getting a cookie from this site.  I disabled cookies, cleared out the cookie folder, and replaced the cookie index.dat with a "virgin" copy from my administrator account.  Renabled cookies, and bam.  After hitting this site, no new cookies appear in the cookie folder.

Well, I *finally* figured this out.  The problem is, I've been clicking on the Aces High logo in the upper left corner to get to the main page.  There is a "&BypassCookie=True" parameter being fed to the UBB via this link.  I also had bookmarked this site with that parameter in the URL.  When I took out that parameter, the lightbulbs and colored folders work fine.

I'm not sure why that's there, but I've never seen another UBB with that feature.  For some reason, only IE5 is affected by this.  Can I get the webmaster's take on this?

The reason for the cookie=true is so that you can go back to the original page and not loose the new post icons on the subjects you have not looked at yet. I personaly like this feature.
