Also can't connect
« on: July 26, 2000, 06:15:00 PM »
I'm connected to the net thru an ISDN router doing NAT.  I play a number of online UDP based games with no problem.  AH doesn't seem to like me for some reason.

After I logon and connect to any online arena, I get the animation of flying around with my clipboard to the tower.  The first message I get is "voice settings updated".  I can see other players radio chat in the message area.  After about 10-12 seconds, I see a message something like "can't do UDP, trying TCP" and immediately after that (seeming at the same instant) get the "connection to host lost" popup.

I've run traceroutes to the server and get excellent pings (around 80ms).  I've shutdown all my firewall software, virus checkers, etc., and I have my router set wide open to forward everything (all ports) to my gaming PC.  Still a no-go.

I've run out of ideas.  Is AH just not going to work for me?

Weird.

I've run AH through various proxy and NAT devices just fine.  It does switch to TCP, but it works ok.

Something wacky must be going on.  Is there a setup or something for your ISDN device you can post?  Maybe we could find an issue there someplace.

Thx for the reply lephturn....

My router is a Zyxel P100.  The user manual is here if you care to peruse it.  I've basically set up what they call SUA (single user account = NAT), and have everything forwarded to this PC.  I don't have any filters in place.

I'm stumped.

I have no problems running through a NAT either.  When you're making your traces, are you doing that from the NAT or behind it?

From behind it.

The fact that I can see other players radio messages for the 10 seconds that I stay connected tells me that something is getting through.

Try disabling RW once and see if that changes anything.

Actually I already had RW disabled.  I just tried it with every combination of RW enabled/disabled, Hosting enabled/disabled, and auto-start enabled/disabled.  Still get the exact same problem.

However, I am able to join a H2H game hosted by someone else, and can fly there.  I still get the 'switching to TCP', but it works.  FWIW, the 'switching to TCP' message comes almost immediately in the H2H game whereas it takes 10-12 seconds in the online arenas.
