Voodoo 5500 Frame Rates?
« on: November 09, 2001, 08:54:00 PM »
Took a few months hiatus from AH, last version I had was 1.08.

I have an Athlon 900 and a Voodoo 5500. I played 1.08 at 1024 res, 16 bit color, 2x antialiasing, and hardly ever dipped below 20 fps even in massive field furballs.

In 1.09, at the same settings, offline or online, at a totally empty field, I spawn on the runway at about 10 FPS, and just taking off and flying around the field I'm at a totally unplayable 7-15 FPS or so..this is easily, on average, less than a third or even a fourth of my 1.08 FPS.

REALLY oddly, turning off 2x antialiasing barely gets me 1-2 more FPS.

Less than 1024 res is just horrible on a 19" monitor..can't do that.

What Gives? Still running DX 7, do have the latest 5500 drivers, though.

What do other V5 owners get?

Nevermind..

It's a long story but it's caused by a crash error in Outlook Express if it use it before running AH.....rebooting solves the problem.

I get my normal 20-40 FPS now.

I knew something was up.  My V5 is still working great.  I've lost almost no fps with 1.08.

Oh yeah... and where can I get 1.09?  Considering it hasn't been released yet, I'm sure HTC would like to check it out too.  ;)

Leph:

What kinda frame rates are you getting?  In the "Hardware Software" forum, some of the guys were posting their results with 3DMark.  They are all in the thousands, my P3 550 with Voodoo 5500 scored a *609* (higher is better...).

My system is:

Pentium 3 550mhz
384mb Crucial PC100 RAM
2x 40gb 7500rpm Maxtor HDDs
ISA SoundBlaster Live
MS Sidewinder Pro (gameport)
DirectX 8.0

Now, up to a few days ago, I was running Windows 98 (not SE).  With 98, I was getting 18 or so FPS running in FSAA x2 mode.  Sure, I can get a few more FPA with FSAA off, but I'll take the hit for the prettier graphics!

Thinking 98 wasn't taking advantage of the RAM on my system, I upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional.  Installed Service Pack 2 and did the Directx upgrade (8.0a).  Wow, system runs great, and page file set to 576 min/max.  Installed Norton Utils and ran Speed Disk.  System runs great, very zippy.  Aces High runs well, I'm seeing anywhere from 21 to 29FPS.  I haven't breached the 30s yet.

I'm wondering what a much faster CPU will do for the Voodoo.  My motherboard is maxxed out RAM and CPU wise, so the next step is a whole new PC.  But can a Voodoo generate the FPS and such of the new cards?  Geo 3's and such?  Or, is it best to retire this guy when a new PC is built?

I really don't know.  I haven't turned the frame counter on in ages.  All I know is that 1024x768 32 bit and 2xFSAA is smooth and playable for me and looks great.  :)

I've got a classic Slot Athlon 700 with 256 Megs of RAM on Win98SE.  I run an SBLive PCI too.
