circa the 1600s swedish king karl ( number unknown lots of king karls in swedish) invaded russia and actually had some succes. this dude was pretty agressive(same period yall took demark and norway ?) and forward thinkin i  dont know the facts but i believ he was acctualy killed in the invasion. ( dang rare for a king in those days)  same dude had a settlement in america "new sweden"( crabofix says it was in delaware)if it had been supported had the king not died we might speak swinglish. but  that was very early in our history when he died i think the indians ate the swedes.

hard to picture invading swedes and i think that was the last war they had lol. like what 600 years ago. ( they were officialy nutral in ww2)

so many good warriors so few good wars

Mmm don't know that much... only Sweden was in the 17th Century a major power (incorporating the whole scandinavian peninsula, so present Sweden+Norway+Finland)

It was Peter the Great (Tsar of Russia) who finaly defeated Sweden and built a new capital on the baltic coast (St-Petersburg). Giving Russia his first Ice-free harbor (The crimea peninsula wasn't conquered yet).

If you want to know more let me look it up

In the "Flower Kingdom", wouldn't that be called "Cross-pollinization"?

I'm half swedish, half german, (German from the neck up, Swedish from the waist down) and English in between (Mothers maiden name was Dover, hehe)

The aforementioned king started (or rather renewed) the war in Russia against the will of his own Parliament. In fact, he had to finance the compain himself from the private funds and loans, hoping that victory will allow him to reduce the power of that pesky assembly.
He was unsuccessfully besieging the Ukranian city Poltava with the help of the Ukrainian getman (big chief) Masepa who switched to swedes' side.
Karl (XII ?) was wounded in the leg during the siege and was carried around.
Then Peter the Great arrived with his army. He was itching to kick Karl's bellybutton after the previous defeats few years earlier. So he spent several years completely reorganising the army.
This time he got his wish. The swedes were totally defeated and Karl has barely escaped capture. Russia's claim to the Baltic shore was now unopposed.
Of course when Karl showed up in Sweden with no army he was promptly kicked out.

He was definitely not a forward-thinking. He cared nothing about governing his state, economy, trade or prosperity. All he cared was military glory and adventures. He was also constantly pissing his subjects off with his orgies and indecent behaavior. Fortunately for them, Sweden was a pretty advanced democracy and they had more taste for trade then adventure.

But what does it have to do with AH?

as indecent as he could be, King Karl XII of Sweden was one of the best military minds of its time (XVIII century)...He managed to unite all scandinavian peninsula, plus Denmark (the former power in Scandinavia). When Prusia, Poland and Russia made an alliance to beat Sweden, he was offered an ultimatum. Not only he rejected it, but in a lighning campaign he beaten Poland and Prussia, and gave Russia's Tzar more than a headache. He fought the russians, but as they made the same tactic as with Napoleon, he made same mistakes. Poltava was its grave as militar power. I believe he was even captured, but somehow he returned to Sweden, and to his Crown...only to start another campaign .This time he attacked Norway (country that got its independence during Karl's captivity). He was killed by a shot when he was about to lead an attack on a Norwegian city.

All this is said only using memory,...it has been a long long time since I heard and readed about King Karl XII of Sweden, AKA "Early Napoleon"

BTW those werent last Sweden's wars. Sweden was on the allied coalition versus napoleon in his last days...and was that with a french ex-napoleon general on Swedish throne!!!!!

Well enough said about Sweden...Where is 1.02?

Ahhhh. So that's where this talk came from over the open channel. I'd thought the Swedes had gone and done something like this in WWII.

What RAM says cept for some minor details ;=)
He actually defeated Denmark 1700, with the support from England and Netherland, but in no way became the king of the united kingdom Denmark-Norway.
Incidently that victory was only part of a great war raging against Russia 1700-21, Denmark-Norway 1700 and 1709-20, Sachen-Polen 1700-06 and 1709-21, Preussen 1715-20 and Great Brittain-Hannover 1715-19.

Karl XII was killed in 1718 - indicies point towards the bullet fired from one of the war tired sweedish soldiers.Karl XII has been adopted in recent times as a symbol of sweedish neonazies.

You want to talk genious?
Try the Norwegean Peder Wesssel - ennobled Tordenskjold "Thundershield" - who repeatedly wooped the sorry sweedish a**** on the seas around Denmark-Norway and Sweeden 1710-1720.And did it repeatedly against all odds.He was killed 1720 when lured into a duel with a professional gambler and notorious duelist (spelling?) Colonel Stael von Holstein.von Holstein had cheated one of Tordenskjolds friends for some money and the hot headed norwegean beat the colonel up.A duel is inevetiable but Tordenskjold gets to choose weapons : pistols in witch he is a true master. When arriving to the place for the duel it turns out that the pistols has been forgotten (rumors talk of conspiracy here). However Tordenskjold do not want to back out - allthough only armed with a light rapier against his opponents (by coincident?) heavy and long ditto. This time he couldnt fight the odds, on attacking von Holstein he gets a deadly wound in the chest and dies within minutes left alone with his servant.

Those were the times.........

Now where *are* 1.02........ ;=)

Since we are on this wonderful period in history

In 1660 Sweden was invaded then rather weak poland. They took most of it using internal disputeded people against one another...
Then they made a grevious mistake
They attempted to grab holy chapel of Czenstochowa for its treasures. Poles being hardcore roman catholic and Sweds being protestant - it quickly turned into holy war of sorts.
Most of the sweds who marched into poland didn't make it out.
War ended in 1665.
There is a wonderful book on the topic ( literrary fiction based on historical facts ) called "The deluge" by Henryk Siekiewicz.

Also, few years before that war, world famous polish cavalery - Husaria - all 2000's of them squared off with 16000 swedesh infantry and "rode them into the ground". One of the last great successes of what used to be the best cavalery in the world. ( they would repeat a similar feat against Turks under Vienna in 1683 )
