Linksys HUB
« on: December 01, 2000, 01:22:00 PM »
Hiya ppl
was wondering if anyone uses this hub or something simular to it ?
also if i had something like this would i be able to play AH on both the computers i have?
thinking of a network here so i can use the cable modem on my new simulator and my desktop pc. It would be nice to be able to play AH with a buddy h2h with both the computers i have. I dont think the connection speed would make much difference sence the Roadrunner updated i get 1.7meg/sec DL's and 1.5meg/sec uploads.

Thanks again for any info.

Yep!!  You can do that, but ya prolly need to D/L AH on the second machine with another user account or name. You won't be able to log on twice with RWY!
A HUB is like the circuit breaker in your house.  All of the electrical circuits attached to it pass through it.  With DSL or CABLE, you have plenty of bandwidth to run 50 computers!!!  I have the NIC card from Bellsouth made by Linksys, and I prefer 3COM NICs-personally.

I'd be curious how that works for you.  I have Adelphia cable internet and they use a DHCP server, so one login per modem.

The only success I've had sharing the connection is building a linux box, putting two ethernet cards in it and having it act as a gateway.

I tried a similar LinkSys product and it couldnt do it.  I could see the internet thru the hub, but once again, one machine at a time.  Maddening.

That device isn't really a hub at all, but actually a dedicated internet sharing device that also acts as a 4 port switch.

It shares the internet using NAT, and the device itself provides DHCP to the internal network.  The device itself is the one interface that actually see's the Internet, and it shares that connection with the internal private network.

I have the Linksys 4 port cable/dsl router with 4 computers networked in my home. It works very well for me, I hook the cable modem into the router and all the computers into the router. The router uses your IP for the internet and assigns ip's to the computers automatically. The only problem I had was I used Linksys LNE 10/100TX nic cards and I had to force them into 10mb full duplex mode to work, they and the router are supposed to support 100mb. The people at Linksys tech support were at a loss as to why they won't work at 100mb, but that doesn't affect internet connection anyway, just the transfer speed between computers on the network. You can also hook a hub into the uplink port and add even more computers. All in all I'm happy with it.
