Use 98SE or Win2k.  There is no reason to "upgrade" to ME.  The OS is bulkier, buggier, slower, and costs more since it is new.

Win2k will be pretty slow in games, but it is very stable.  I would personally only put 2k on if it wasn't a gaming machine.  There are still lingering problems with OpenGl, DirectX (though 8.0 helped), and USB drivers.  If Microsoft holds true to form, win2k will only finally work right after about patch 5 and then is due for replacement.

A dual boot of 2k and win98se is an option.

Can't speak about ME... no experience there.  I use Win2k Pro.  Works fine for me.  The system very rarely crashes compared to Win98.
Aces High plays great...no noticeable framerate loss for me.  Caveats: USB joystick/rudder/throttles don't yet work in Aces High in Win2k, although most analog controllers *should* work.  (My Sidewinder 3d Pro works great in Win2k--although it's a b*tch to get it to work in Win98.)  Win2k tends to need more RAM or it bogs down... 128MB would be a minimum, 256 preferred.

If you want to be able to play any game on your system, go with 98SE.

Win2k is great if you have DSL and wish to connect more than one computer to the line.  It is also a great platform for playing Aces high.  One thing though.. it is a memory hog.. best to have as much as you can afford.  Hopefully that will be more than 256 meg.

The downside to win2k is that not every game will work with it.  It is also a little more hardware/driver sensitive.  For example, AH will not recognize a USB joystick under Win2k.  On the other hand, I could never get my gameport joystick to work with 98SE.

As far as AH goes, you can use either.  It may be wise to ask yourself what else you want to use it for and if one platform is better for that than the other.  AH won't care.

I just purchased a new system with ME pre-installed, no problems whatsoever.

Win2k sees usb joysticks just fine, its AH that doesn't like usb sticks in win2k.

I've used my usb pedals in win2k without any problems.

For a pure gaming box, Win98 SE is the way to go.

Win2k Pro is a sweet OS though.  I run it on my server here at home and I run it on my workstation at work which I game on as well.  Lately every game I have tried in Win2k has worked perfectly, and with DX 8.0 the speed is almost as good as Win98.  I would recomend 256 megs of RAM to run Win2k, but it runs really sweet with it.  Anything more is a very small gain, not really worth it.  256 is the sweet spot for Win2k Pro.

If the USB controller issues were solved I would be running it in a heartbeat on my gaming rig.
