New player, new machine
« on: March 28, 2001, 05:58:00 AM »
Hi

I'm thinking of defecting here (from AW) BUT I will need a new PC, the component that concerns me most is the graphic card, which one to buy? :-(

I'm thinking of getting the ASUS V7700 GeForce GTS 32MB.

Does anyone use this and/or know if it will be OK for Aces High?

I'm also thinking of getting the Creative Player 5.1 soundcard... will this be ok as well?

Your help appreciated in advance

RGJ (and other kraits/WOD), you can't escape me !  LOL

Well, there are a variety of good video cards to choose from.  What is the price range on that one?  Other options include Geforce 2 MX, Geforce 2, ATI Radeon, etc.  What CPU are you running?  Some video cards are more CPU dependent than others, so that can influence your decision.

Skuzzy has great info up here:  http://www.benchdata.com/

As for a soundcard, it depends on what your goal is.  If you just want a gaming sound card, the Creative Soundblaster Live Value is the best bang for your buck.  If you want something fancier, Hercules has a sound card and external box thing that looks wicked... I want one of these: http://us.hercules.com/products/audio/gametheaterxp/index.php3

Please provide some more information on the rest of your system, monitor etc.  Also, what your inteded usage is, and budget.  Then we'll see about a more exact recommendation.

WW,

I can recommend a fantastic Video card that will run AH for you and you only.

Trident  ISA 512k video card

I thought I got rid of you once and for all:-).

All honesty mate, I use a Hercules Geforce 2 GTS 64mb and that works ok for AH.

What processeor are you using AMD or Intel, as I think you will find that for price and power the AMD is better.

Let me know when you are coming on board as my K/D needs upping a bit:-).

Hi Lephturn, thanxs for prompt reply....

More info =

Graphics card = other choice was the ATI Radeon 64MB (though is a bit costly, may choose 32MB ver)

Motherboard = Asus

CPU = Pentium 1GB (I would be loathe not to use a Pentium and an Asus together..quality)

Soundcard = Creative player 5.1 (thinking forward to Dolby sim's)

Internal PCI modem ? is that possible for games.. heard some rumours contrary...

As for the monitor I'm holding out to see if the new slimline lightweights get cheaper otherwise I'll get a 19" CRT one

I'll check out the Hercules site as well ;-)

btw, absolutely Excellent AH site..thanks, I've already printed off half of your website and am using your gunsight.. Am I hooked already ?

Hi RGJ, not fallen off that bike yet? hehe

I've replied to lephturn above my new machins spec's (as he would appear far more sensible than you and me put together!)

I've managed to get hold of a 128K monochrome card will that do ? I quite like the green "nightsight" look

p.s. thanks for the Hercules card tip ;-)

cya soon mate, prolly end up flyin together as well... look forward to that (only time you'll get behind me too ! LOL)

I just bought the Asus V7700 Deluxe card myself.  It should deliver awesome FPS in AH and any other game.  AH doesn't really demand as much as many other 3d games.  The engine is pretty optimized for FPS.
