Curious frame rate issue.
« on: June 14, 2001, 09:53:00 AM »
Hi,

I have recently updated my machine to the following spec

Assus a7m266 motherboard
1x256 MB Cruical 2.5cl DDR 2100 RAM
AMD 1.33Ghz 266FSB CPU
Creative Geforce 2 GTS 64MB
2xIBM Deskstar ATA100 28GB disks on 1 IDE cable (only 1 drive currently in use)
Soundblaster Live
3COM 10/100 905 Either net card
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card (nothing connected)

DirectX 7.0 & 8a (some on both)
Win98 + SP1
nVidia 12.41 (latest)

1024x768x32bpp No frame rate limit.

I noticed that I was getting quite low (compaired to Gremlins 950Mhz machine) frame rates. Specifically if I launch NE at A1 in the islands terrain with Shift F1 in a LA7 with no external Ord 100% fuel, I get 41 FPS, Gremlin get 56FPS.

So assuming that I had done somthing wrong on my install I loaded Sisoft Sandra and checked out the various benchmarks. Every thing is in order, within a few % of expected perfomance levels.

Next I ran AH at various resolutions. To my amasment no matter what resolution I use I allways get 41 FPS in the above possition?

Given that the graphics card does not seem to be the bottle neck and cpu and memmory based bachmarks seem to be OK I am at a lose to explain the disparity in the frame rate.

Any ideas anyone?

Later,

Grayarea.

When you run Ah for the first time, you get a video config screen.  On this Config screen is an option to limit your max FPS in order to eliminate some problems that were showing up with very high frame rates.   You can limit your FPS to the following FPS:

40 FPS

60 FPS

Unlimited FPS

I have mine set on 60 and get 61 FPS almost all the time.   I bet you have yours set to 40 and don't know it.  Check and see if thats the case.

I wish it were that simple!

Thanks,

Hi Grayarea,
Have you checked your monitor refresh rates in display properties? It can really make a difference by getting your refresh rate to match the monitor's specs. Monitor rates do weird things when they can't maintain the designated refresh rates. the "Adapter Default" setting is not really good enough and "Optimal" not much better. I am of course assuming you have the correct monitor specified and therefore the correct "monitor.inf" file loaded.   ;)

Oh..... Are you running  4*FSAA. If you are I don't think that sounds to bad @ 1024*768 32bit Colour.

Hope this helps..

I have not loaded the 'correct' monitor info file, but am running the monitor at 75Khz. I have tried 85Khz as well, exactly the same.

No the system is not running any FSAA.

Ho hum

check your horizon detail level. the shift-F1, shift-F2 and shift-F3 settings once you are in game. They make a huge difference in frame rate. default i think is shift-F2.
