KINGSVILLE, Texas (CNN) -- An F-16 fighter jet crashed Sunday afternoon at an air show at Kingsville Naval Air Station, said a Pentagon spokesman. The pilot, the only person aboard, was killed.
Lt. Col. Steve Campbell said the plane was from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
No one and no property on the ground were hit, Campbell said. The Pentagon is launching an investigation.
Corpus Christi resident John Rubino saw the plane hit the ground.
"There was a bright, red and orange fireball," Rubino said.
"You could hear it and feel the shock of the concussion. It felt like someone hitting you in the chest."
The rest of the air show, which was to include a performance by the Navy's Blue Angels, was canceled.
Investigators were searching the wreckage for a reason why the plane went down.
Kingsville is in south Texas, about 30 miles south of Corpus Christi.
