Well they wouldn't allow a Spit IX skin I did ( "Hello Tolly" ) as it was used only for flight tests in the U.S.
On the way home a large bit of nose art was added at it's stop over in Greenland or Iceland.
As it never saw combat it wasn't allowed.

I believe that's the same reason we can't have any B-24 'formation ships'.

Kev perhaps it was that it had no possibility to see combat. It was going to America for testing purposes.

This P-51 would be in the middle of the biggest war in history, smack dab in central Europe, where the possibility that it saw action was greatly increased. While it might not have shot anything down, chances are it flew border patrols and interdictions and other "peaceful" but non-lethal duties. I think you could argue that "it served" on a front line.
