LOCK UPS LOCK UPS LOCK UPS!
« on: October 27, 2001, 10:38:00 PM »
Now I am at a total loss here. I reformatted my computer and loaded the 10.80 pixelview drivers for my GeForce2 MX. I flew for about an hour with no problems. I decided to try the 12.90 pixelview drivers and right back to the lockups. I have tried reverting back to the 10.80 but now I lock up within 5 mins of entering the room. I went in and set the Vid card to standard vga and reloaded that way and still no luck. I am ready to start shooting this puter and anybody around       Anybody got any tips??

1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon
KT3ABX AZZA MB with KT133A chipset
64MB PixelView Geforce 2 MX
Creative SB PCI512
512 MB Micron PC133 C=3 RAM
Windows 98SE
DX8a

would appreaciate any help I cannot play the game otherwise

Let me add my lockups are what I always gotten screen freezes arbitraily. And speakers emit a constant Beep Tone. Then I have to push the reset button. Also I have tried the Det's also and to no avail 12.41's 21.81's, and 21.83's

Well I think I may have it figured out. I want to share what I did in case anybody else has the same problem. First off I switched the sound settings for the PCI512 over to "Game Compatible Device" and there was another setting for simutaneous Wavs. The default was 4 I bumped it up to 20 or something like that. And flew for quite some time no problems. I will change settings back 1 at a time and see which was causing the problems and report back to you. That way it can be in the file of "What's up here"  :)

I've been having a problem like that. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same because it doesn't happen all the time. I will enter the arena and it will lock up no more than 2 min after entering. Wierd thing is that it doen't happen all the time but when it does I might not be able to enter the arena for hours. I'm thinking I have a connection problem because it will let me enter after a while. Would like to see what you come up with for what the problem was.

YOYO
Try using the nvidia referense drivers, instead of the manuf drivers, and also make sure sb16 emulation is all alone on irq 5.
You can reserve it for that irq in ur bios

 Hope it helps

Ok black falcon I should said this I was using the reference drivers and no good. Still was having the same problem. Thats why I went to the pixel view ones trying to find the problem. I was thinking Vid Card all the way but now I know the problem is the soundcard. I am having trouble logging onto AH today I keep getting a Host timed out error. But this is the first time I've ever had this problem.

Well now I haven't got a clue where the problem lies   It did ok for a little bit but then right back to the lockups. All sound acceleration set to 0. I even flashed the BIOS with the new fix and nothing. Put the new 4in1 drivers on nadda. Even pulled the Ceforce 2 out and installed a DV V770 TNT2 Ultra 32MB a friend gave me once. My FR jumped up to almost double the GForce2 card I thought maybe I found it. But nope, lockup after 5 mins. I ran SiSoft Sandra which was telling me all kinds of problems with the GeForce 2 which was why I installed the TNT2. The TNT2 came in clean no warnings at all. There were some other things on there tho, telling me my AGP bus speed was too fast, my PCI bus speed was too fast. And it even told me my NIC card had too high a latency, which it says would hog the PCI bus and might cause data transfer from say the soundcard to not get transferred right and cause sound drop out or lockup. But I find that hard to beleive that a NIC card would cause problems like that. For what its worth mi NIC is a Realtek RTL8139  anybody?? I'm at wits end here

Not sure if your problem is the same mine was or not.

I would enter into the game start to fly and get mini freezes lasting 1 to 2 seconds until a hard lockup would happen. In some cases my speakers would start screaching at me.

I pulled out my SB live. Installed a new SB 5.1 digital and the problem went away. I came across a SB Audigy and installed it without a problem too.

Installed the SB live I had and WHAM problem was back. Uninstalled it and smiled as it hit the bottom of the trash can.

I came to the conclusion that in my case the SB live was bad. Hope this helps.

I'm noticing that many of the users who complain lockups are the ones that got fooled by WW2OL into buying 512MB+ memory.

Windows98 can't handle that much, which might be the root of your problem. Interesting test would be to rip off that 256Mb dimm from the board and see if the lockups continue.

If I were you, I'd upgrade OS to XP or w2k. Preferably later.

Hmm interesting thought. I didn't realize 98 couldn't handle the 512MB. I had the same problem with the Windows ME version. Is that the same as Win 98 for the mem? Well thats something I could do. Another I was gonna try was to pull my SB out and see if I can get the OB Audio to work. When I first got this computer I couldn't get the audio to work so I bought the SB PCI 512 but I then realized I installed the wrong 4n1 drivers so I reformatted and started over. But I never tried the OB SC. I think thats what I'll try tonight. I don't want to stay with that sound setup, but it might tell me if that SC is the problem at no extra cost. TY. I do plan to update to XP soon, but would prefer to wait till MS works out some bugs for it first. Maybe sooner than I expect. Can somebody explain to me why the Diamond Viper V770 Ultra gives me much better performance than the Geforce 2??? They look the same to me but FR is almost double the Geforce 2.

P.S. I appreaciate the help guys.

i went back to 7.52 and have no problems at the moment. also used to have lockups with newer nVidia drivers ...
btw ; is this problem on-line or off-line ?

just noticed i also seem to have a Pixelview - GeForce2 MX from Prolink (www.prolink.com.tw)

Could this be a heat-related issue?  Being able to fly for a while OK and then locking up strikes me as probably more heat-related than driver related.  A driver-problem would be evident right away, not after some time of flying?

Also, I am a TNT 32Mb user who tried upgrading to a Visiontek Geforce2 MX 32MB, and my FR dropped.  Returned the GEforce and went back to the TNT.   Experiences like that must be how "GeFarce" got started...

AS for the mem limitations; win98se(not win98) and me can support up to 512mb of ram; win 2000 and xp can support over that.
If you migrate to xp may i suggest you setup a dualboot machine. Oh and ms already working on sp1 for xp
When using the sb card it's really important to make sure IRQ5 is all alone w/sb16 emulation using it. Or else you'll get all kinds of random problems.

Well with the Geforce 2 I used the drivers that came with the card and the same problems. I used the 12.41 reference drivers with the TNT2 had the same problem. I took out the SB PCI512 and had a squeak of a time getting the VIA AC 97 OB audio working but its working right now. I don't like the idea of using the OB audio but I flew around the room for 1 1/2 hours today with no lockups. Right now it looks like the problem was the PCI 512. But I hate to say "HEY I FOUND THE PROBLEM!" again like I did the last time. If that is the case then I'll be lookin for a new SC to pop in here. I do think I have finally exited the tunnel on this endless quest to fix this POS computer  :) ty for all the help I hope this is "Really" the fix.

I had a crapload of problems as well, i now use the Gforce2 MX400 64meg card, had a TNT2 previous and a TNT previous to that.

When uninstalling the Detonator drivers, not everything is uninstalled. After a lot of reading and research i found a program called Detonator Destroyer. I hunts all reference to the Detonator drivers and anything that the install would have left in the registry.

Gforce2 runs smooth without problems, although i had to go to the 7.78 Detonator drivers because i had problems running wwiionline. No probs with AH.
Ill post link to the Detonator Destroyer program when i get home from work.

Dog out.....
