Object Detail
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:57:56 PM »
I just downloaded the hi  res pack and changed my max texture size to 1024 to use the hi res stuff.  I noticed slightly lower fps at altitude, but down low to the ground it drops from the mid 50's to around 10 fps.  I adjusted the object detail and can maintain 30 fps at the middle mark and 60+ fps at "faster" mark.  Its definitely worth the lower object detail to see the great aircraft textures, but I'm curious what is my limiting factor for maxing out the object detail?  Is it my video card or processor?  Or a number of of factors?

My info is right below and I have disabled other plane skins.

You need enough ram to buffer the textures. Large display memory and large system ram will help you handle the larger textures.

Of course there is a question of bandwith also, there will be some point where things stop moving fast enough despite the amount of useable ram you have.

So should I be looking for a video card with 512MB of memory and increasing my system ram above 2 GB?

What are you guys using that can max the object detail with the hi res pack?

Skuzzy has lined out the specs in earlier posts many times so I suggest to use the search function.

Two things.
wher do you have yoru detail sliders at?

And how many processess do you have running.

My machine is the same as yours(2 gig ram, Radeon9550 256  meg vid card) only my CPU is running at 2233MHz
And running Hi res at 1400 X1050 with my sliders a little more then halfway
but could probably bump them up higher
I get a solid 60 FPS (at that res my monitor will ony get 60 herz so the framerate wont show higher then that )

Got my proccesses down to 22 on bootup and was able to move my sliders up to about 3/4 without any loss in framerate (so far)
Havent tried any farther then that so cant say if I can go ever further.

The Radeon 9000 series of cards are very old in this day and age. The equivelant competitor was the Ge4400Ti or 5000 series (which was a flop itself).

You really don't want to run 1024 textures on such a card, simply because it is older, it can only handle a fraction of the number crunching that more modern cards can handle.

Yet I am doing so without any problems.
which is kinda my point.
He has what appears to me a higher end system then I do.
If anything his performance should be better then mine no?

As for my card. For the moment thats  the hand Im dealt.
so thats what I get to play with.
Would love a newer card but its not the highest thing on my priority list at the moment LOL
