F6F vs Zekes
« on: April 16, 2007, 03:26:36 AM »
HERE IS a short film showing the F6F hellcat. we find ourself instantly faced with a co-altitude A6m and a high A6m both fixed on shooting at us.
very easy manouvers with acute timing is the key on this one.

any questions are welcome and encouraged and any more skilled players critique is also very welcome.

I suffer from zekeophobia and seeing you kill one made me happy. That was a great shot though and I rarely fair well in a situation like that(or pretty much any situation). I'll watch that one a few times and try to overcome my fear of co alt and high a6m's. Thanks for the film

That was a nice shot Bat. One thing for those of you taking notes at home should notice:

Bat is always moving. He's always turning to cut into the angle, he's never flying straight unless it's to extend.

I fought this fella named Bighorn for many months. I got to the point where I could ride a stall as good as him and preform manuevers as well as him. I was a virtual mirror of him but I rarely beat him. This was because apon reveiwing the film of our fights he would always begin his moves a few seconds before me. While I was flying the same heading for those split seconds he was onto the next move.

Sorry to go off coarse a bit Bat, but watching so many films I see this same fact over and over. So once again to all those trying to glean some info off this film, always move, always attack!

nice shot on the first one fink.

you newer guys should take a look again at the overshoot maneuver fink goes through when the second zeke is on his six. it is called a lag roll.

perfectly executed.

***********

nose down.

pull throttle.
(the amount depends on the initial rate of closure between you and your enemy).

brake into the enemy/start you lag roll.
(this situation called for a break right and up)

notch some flaps in.
(again dependent on the rate of closure)

continue to roll onto the tail of the enemy and pull the trigger.
*******************

it is all timing...

i learned how to do the lag roll my 1st or 2nd month playing. i could do it, but my sense of timing (rate of closure/situation awareness) was way off. it was just about useless @ the start.

it takes lots of hours playing and practicing to be able to apply this move, whether being bounced by a jet at 400mhp or a zeke @ 140mph.

but when you do get the feel, the game is whole new game:)

for lots more info this page.

Thing about Zekes, that most people forget, is that they are not the uber turners they are made to be.
Make no mistake, turning with one under 200mph is suicide, but at or over 250-300mph, chances are your ride turns better.
Use that for short turns and you stand a better chance than just running straight. Also very few zeke drivers expect an opponent to start turning.

If you're being overtaken by a 140mph Zeke you already got problems. :D

But Hazard hits it right on. Zeros are really one-trick ponies against pretty much all the mid- and late-war rides. They can turn at insanely slow speeds but not much else. M5 is more capable, but against any well-flown later American iron, even starting with an advantage the Zeke faces an uphill battle.

What makes Zekes frustrating to fight is that they can be very elusive and hard to nail targets because they can so easily slip out of your way (IMO, Zeros and Franks are the two most adept at this). ESPECIALLY if you're making high-speed passes so it's easy to get suckered into a low-speed fight just out of frustration.

Oh, and as I've learned the hard way: BEWARE OF LOW ZEROS WITH A HIGH CHERRY PICKER COVERING HIM. It's VERY easy to have your E advantage over the Zero whittled away evading the punk harassing you while you try to extend or make a run against the Zeke, and once your E is gone you've been played right into the A6Ms strengths.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The really fun thing about zekes is that spit and hurc pilots will come down and want to knife fight with you. MMMMM, those perkies taste like chicken.
