I have been to South Africa a number of times, both on vacation and with work. It is a wonderful, beautiful country populated by some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

It is also the most crime ridden place I have ever been and the poverty has to be seen to be believed. It was after seeing the shanty towns in Johannesburg that I realized Louisiana wasn't Third-World after all. By African standards, its doing OK. But those sure as heck aren't high standards.

The crime statistics referred to above simply point out the presence of a police force that collects such statistics and a population not scared to report them.

they are doing real good.

I cleaned carpets for a living for a year or so. (Man that job sucked! lol) I cleaned for a South African family once. I couldn't quite place their accent, I guessed every country that spoke English (except South Africa) and then gave up. :D

At one point during the conversation I asked them, what made you decide to immigrate to the US. Their response was immediate, crime. I said....crime here is pretty bad as well, isn't that kinda like jumping from the frying pan into the fire? The wife said, yes there is crime in the US but you don't have to put bars over your windows to be safe at night. I think that just about says it all.

With the exception of New Zealand the gun control in those nations are pretty lax. Somehow I get the feeling that most of those crime statistics are about "drunk and disorderly" charges in Finland and Denmark. ;)

Yup, but compared to the horror and depravity that prevail most places on the continent of Africa…
