Free Book Giveaway Contest...
« on: July 18, 2007, 01:25:13 PM »
Hi All,

Since I love trivia and giving away good books, I decided to start up the free book give-away trivia contests again, this going with different themes, either of authors or subjects. Also, this time I'm going to give the winner(s) a chance to choose from a number of books. So anyway, the first book giveaway will be books by one of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis.

Here are the trivia questions all of them are somehow related to Lewis, his life, times, and work. First person to send all the correct answers to me via PM wins their choice of:

The Screwtape Letters: Lewis' most amusing work, written as a dialogue between a master and an apprentice devil.
Mere Christianity: An introduction to and defense of the Christian faith originally done as a series of radio talks by Lewis during the Second World War.
The Problem of Pain: Aimed more at the Christian audience, Lewis answers why an all-loving and all-powerful God would allow suffering and shows that suffering can work for good.

1) How do the two children travel to different worlds in the first book of the Narnia series.
2) When Lucy asks Mr. Beaver if Aslan is "safe", what does he tell her?
3) What was the name of the literary club or society C.S. Lewis formed at Oxford?
4) Which author of extraordinarily popular works of fantasy was also a member of the club?
5) What are the names of the two main devils who write to one another in the Screwtape letters?
6) Which British Comic Actor did perhaps the best know recording of the Screwtape letters?
7) What do the initials C.S. stand for?
8) What did Lewis teach at Oxford?
9) The Death of C.S. Lewis was almost entirely overshadowed by whose death on the same day?
10) Why don't the children remain in London in the "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe?"
11) Did Lewis have any children?
12) The saga of Lewis' all-too-brief marriage to Joy Gresham was made into what movie?
13) What unit of the British Army did Lewis serve in?
13) What C.S. Lewis book is about to be released as a movie in 2008?
14) What country was Lewis born and raised in?
15) In Lewis' Space Trilogy, what is the scientist Weston's "hope" for the future of humanity?
16) In "The Pilgrim's Regress", who is the woman who slays the giant when he cannot answer her questions?
17) What ideology did Joy Gresham embrace until her conversion to Christianity?
18) Which author did Lewis base his character Ransom on?
19) What is NICE and what worry of Lewis for the future did it embody?
20) What was Lewis' nickname?

TexasMom, I hope you will be able to. I forgot to clean out my PM inbox but there should be enough room now.

C.S. Lewis is among my favorite authors. Though he did become a Christian mid-life and his faith colored all of his work, I think anyone can take pleasure from it. If I didn't already have those two books in my collection I'd be pm'in ya. :)

without ruining the game....

I always enjoyed reading about the friendship between Lewis and Tolkein. Lewis thought Tolkein was dawdling since it took him soooo long to finish the LOTR. Lewis cranked out his LW&W books in record time.

You need to count again. ;)

If you have all of them, how about "The Abolition of Man?" I can substitute that one...

Tolkein in turn gave Lewis a hard time for mixing his genres and thought his allegory was too obvious, but it was actually Tolkein who suggested that he write the Space series, which I actually enjoy as much as Narnia if not more. Yet another reason to be indebted to Tolkein.

O for the days when genuine genius walked amongst us. ;)

Seagoon,

I respect, but rarely agree with you on these message boards. But on this I heartly agree.

I wonder if you have read any of Iain Bank's work? In my opinion, he is the closest modern peer to Tolkien and Lewis.
