This story has been building for a while. An Arab peace initiative, extended in person to the Israeli prime minister by two prominent leaders of the Arab League, is an event I never thought I'd live to see.

There are indications that other moderate Arab leaders may follow their lead.

An historic event covered in today's newspaper.............buried on page 4.

Unfreakingbelievable. What raving geniuis made the decision that this was not front page material?

Nice, a recognition, not necessarily ratified by the main combatants and all Isreal has to do is give back all the territory they won after being attacked. In addition to that they will have a possibly unified Palistinian state on their border. Of course they aren't part of the agreement but I'm sure they will jump on the bandwagon.

I doubt that that area will ever settle down until the pals and the isreali's can sit down and discuss things instead of trading fire.

I think it was Dave Barry who said something to effect that when all of mankind is extinct and the only living organisms left on Earth are microbes, the microbes in the middle east will be bitter enemies.

Yeah yeah. What did you expect the Arab leaders to do? Recommend unconditional acceptance of Israel and its' territorial claims? Of course they're going to bring up all the old demands for withdrawal. There is a certain amount of posturing that they are required to go through to preserve an image of "toughness in the face of Jewish hegemony."

But they are there, in person, and their demands will undoubtedly soften over time. The same is true of the Israelis. Nothing of great moment may come from the initial conferences, but the mere fact that they are sitting down together is significant.

So far it's taken over 40 years to soften, I wouldn't hold my breath.

They murdered the last powerful man in the Middle East who really wanted peace with Israel. And to this day Jimmy Carter gets credit for what Anwar Sadat did. And Carter is a Palestinian hugging idiot. Go figure.

I figured Israel's enemies just wanted the high ground back before they all gang banged attacked them again...

To me it's all crap - a way for the Arabs to throw up their arms and say "See, Israel doesn't want peace or they'd go along with this ridiculous plan". It won't make the front page until Israel tells them "thanks but no thanks" and they can be made out to be the bad guys .. again.

It's probably due to the fact the initiative isn't new. It was first proposed by the Arab League in 2002, it's been pushed a few times since then.

The end result of any peace negotiations will always be the same. There are a couple of million Palestinians living on the West Bank, Israel cannot offer them citizenship, and because of the 2 - 400,000 settlers it has moved in to the area, cannot withdraw.

That means there is nothing really to talk about, which is why negotiations have been rare, and gone nowhere.

its another "piece plan" that doesn't involve those who strap on the bombs in Palestine or those who sweep up the flesh of their loved ones off the streets in Israel - at least not yet, but im not holding my breath.

the truism says that there is no peace without resounding military victory.

I don't see a resounding military victory happening over there - unless maybe when the fanatics are able to get their hands on a nuclear bomb.

Israel should strengthen their borders when initiatives like this come out.
