File Problem
« on: July 31, 2007, 10:07:08 AM »
Hi Guys,

I keep my counseling DOC files encrypted with an archiving program called Winace. This morning I went to open the file for a couple I'm counseling this evening when I got an error along the lines of "Not a Winace Archive" and now the file is there but it has a 0 Kbyte size. Any ideas on how I can fix the actual file?

Because I'm an idiot, I don't have any back-ups of that directory and it would be a real bummer to lose over a year of case history.

Size zero... that's bad.

If you use winXP, you might be able to use system restore to find the file but I've never done that myself.

Word often creates temporary working copies of files that are open that are hidden by default and sometimes left behind, you might be able to use an old one of those to recovery some of the data.

To see invisible files, open the directory where you expect this file to live, got o the Tools menu, then Folder Options, then the View tab, and where it says "Hidden files and folders" make sure 'Show hidden files and folders' is checked.  Press Ok.

If you're lucky, some files with gray names have shown up, and at least one of them has almost the same name as the .DOC you're trying to recover, except with a tilde or some other funky character as the first letter in the name.  Copy that to another physical drive and try to open it.

If that doesn't work, in general, try to minimize how much data to write to this disk until you've had a chance to run chkdsk or some other disk check utility to try to recover chunks of the file.  Chkdsk acts like a broadsword when a scalpel would be more appropriate, but it might be able to create 'FILE.001' and 'FILE.002' etc in the root of your drive with chunks of raw data that might have your missing case info.

Good luck, Seagoon!

you might do a search for the title...if there are backups a basic search should turn them up provided that you select the option to show all files and folders (not sure if those get hidden or not...ive used this method before.

i have also used recovery software in the past, but i cant for the life of me remember what it was or where i found it.

you might try going to a place like download .com and doing a search for "file recovery" or "data recovery"

the one that i used found lots of stuff.  i was amazed.  i do know that the one that i used didn't cost a thing.

good luck.
