Full, Medium, Short, Ground Vis
« on: August 12, 2007, 05:32:28 AM »
Hi all,

I've been around since AH I and have never seen any details of what these settings do. I've looked through Help and only see that these functions exist, but have not found an explanation of how they change view settings.

Shft F1 - Full Vis
Shft F2 - Medium Vis
Shft F3 - Short Vis
Shft F4 - Ground Vis

1) Do these change visibility based on the level's of Object Detail and Ground Detail Range you've set on the Graphic Detail option page?

2) or do they use other parameters?

3) What is the difference between Full Vis and Ground Vis?

I've seen that the best framerate is Short Vis and the worst framerate hit is Ground Vis.

Actually I had thought about asking for two or three configurable Graphic Detail settings that you could set as you like for different conditions - such as high alt bombing, a massive FPS hitting furball, or a GV battle. But these existing functions probably fill the bill.

Anyone care to explain how they work, what changes and by how much?

I'd also suggest adding an explanation in Help if there isn't one. If there is a page, I'd suggest putting it in, or linking it to, the View System.

Thanks

It sets the virtual range that AH will bother rendering graphics for.  For instance, on short range view, that moutian range way off in the distance will disappear, as well as the individual trees, and other ground objects on the terrain until you get closer to them.  The net effect is that your pc is not rendering those graphics, so it is able to produce frames at a faster rate. Seeing others planes are not affected by the range setting except at extreme dot distances.

While I upgrade components on a regular basis, my pc is nearly never top of the line, so in a dogfight when I really want great frame rates for gunnery, I will switch over to short range vis.  I normally cruise with full vis.

Medium vis is somewhere in between.

Ground vis is very important when GVing.  Not only does Vis range affect ground objects, but also ground vehicles.  It is possible for distant GVs to be invisible if you have Vis at a lower setting.  In ground vis, everything that should be in your view is rendered at its full appropriate graphic detail.  Obviously that makes it the hardest on your frame rates.

Also, I believe only full vis is directly tied to your graphic detail and range settings.  Medium and short vis will arbitrarly not render things beyond a set distance range, and ground vis will override your settings.

In medium it doesn't draw trees and stuff once you above a certain alt. In full u need to go higher for the trees to disappear. I think the range of both is the same. Not 100% on this....feel free to correct me!:)

You'll mainly see the difference full>med from higher that 1000ft when all the individual trees on the terrain tile disappear :)

Okay

So my PC rig is not bad, but not top of the line. I've got the sliders in Object Detail and Ground Detail Range set to about half, and up to now I've only flown with FULL Vis.

1) If I max out the 2 sliders, would Medium Vis reproduce, approximately, what I've got set now?

2) And I understand that Ground Vis is max of the max no matter what your sliders?

Thanks

1) It would likely be similar for the range slider, but probably not the detail slider.  Range setting makes an object either off or on, but the detail slider how finely it will render a texture.

2) Yes, I just doublechecked that offline to verify.  A vehicle that is invisible with the ranger slider turned down, appears when you press shift-f4
