I think a large part of Layne's problem was his inability to cope with fame. His complete misunderstanding of the adulation and fear of being found out as a fraud.
Not saying that he was a fraud, but a person who looks at themselves as a normal, everyday guy who is suddenly thrust into a spotlight and surrounded by sycophants will question the motives of those around them and what is expected of them.
Being elevated to a near god-like standing and the fear that goes with that of being found out as a mere mortal...
