Hyper threading vs dual core Intel chips
« on: December 15, 2007, 06:11:20 PM »
3.2 ghz single core hyper threading
or
3.0 ghz dual core without hyper threading.

Which one would be better in a new system, any noticeable differences?

Meatwad...  Dual core?  Or Core-Duo?

Big difference.

Dual Core (Pentium-D) is basically two cores of old design.

Core-Duo is a brand new design, latest technology chip.  It runs cooler and more efficiently, uses less power, and is much more stable.  A 2.0GHZ Core-Duo runs MUCH faster than a 3.0GHZ Pentium-D.

"Hyperthreading" processors in my opinion are more hype than anything else.  Dual core is going to be better in almost every scenario, unless you have an operating system that doesn't support multiple cores (Such as Windows 95/98/ME), or never run any software that supports multiple cores (AH DOES).

The ones I looked at were Dual-core Pentium D's. Probabally I'll start ordering parts next week

Isn't it fun trying to decode all those brand names?

Tigger nailed it.  I frequently have to run to Tomshardware.Com to find out what's the latest.

I am a hardcore AMD fan and all of my machines (except server) are AMD based but they have dropped the ball on speed (and IMHO value) the last 2 generations of chips.

Core 2 duo is the way to go for raw HP

Q6600 is getting cheaper. I have no experience on its game performance but I can tell you it flies on desktop. Only bad side is little headroom for overclocking.
