Porking
« on: December 31, 2007, 11:35:51 PM »
I'm old and getting useless for air-to-air combat, so I thought I'd try to be useful by porking.  I tried to practice offline, but the ack kills me after one pass.  Yet when I watch enemy fly through our ack in the MA they seem to live forever.  What is the secret- or is the offline ack setting more deadly than online?

I was only practicing on a small airfield- I suspect I'd be vaporized instantly at a large airfield.  I was trying to come in fast and at treetop level.  Is that a no-no?

NEVER come in at tree top level.

Always come in from AT LEAST 7K...
Use something fast that can manage "E" somewhat well. I use Ponys, Jugs, 38s, TYPH's, 190's...the list goes on. Most people pork Ords and Radar with fighters.

When de-acking it is most wise to work from the edges. Come in high and fast and hit the end of the runway... make sure your exit path isn't in the line of the town or you'll take hits on the way out.

Then just rinse, lather and repeat, work you way in gradually. That way, only a portion of the ack is a serious danger to you.

You can change 1 setting in Arena settings and attack friendly structures without having to worry about feild guns too much. That seting is 'ProtectObjects'
You can then destroy field guns, bunkers, hangers, etc. and the field guns wont zero in on you. Once your attack technique is better you can then try with enemy field guns at an enemy base.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

My technique, which usually works:

Ords/radar - Dive in from at least 7k AGL, extend back to at least 7k AGL and repeat. Use the clipboard maps to plan your flight path so that you pass over/come close to as few ack guns as possible. When pulling out jink left/right/up/down just a little, no more than say -2 or +2 g's.

Troops -  little more difficult as there are a bunch of barracks, but essentially its the same technique. I try to line up my flight path so I'll be passinge over at least 2 barracks but not flying over half the base to get to the second. Bombs on the first of the pair & guns on the second, .50s are ok, but cannons, especially 30mm from a 110, are much better. After your attack run, proceed as above, jinking slightly, extending back out and up to 7h AGL.

Ack on Vbases - kill manned ack first. The other 2 auto acks are not really too much of a problem. Try to line up your attack run so you will pass over both of them, 'one pass haul ass' kind of thinking.

Airfields - work from the outside in, start at the corners, in & out FAST. Again start at 7k-ish AGL, take out no more than 2 or 3, head back out/up with small jinks as described above. Prioritize manned/auto as the situation demands. A crewed manned gun is hard to take down before it breaks your plane apart, best thing I've noticed is to fire as far away as possible.

There may be other, better suggestions, but this is what I generally do/have done with decent success.

I use the trusty F6F-5.  I come in from 10K over the field diving at ~45 degrees to target then lift the nose and WEP out.  Rolling on the way out helps sometimes.  Once clear of the ack I put it in max climb and get ready to repeat (from a somewhat lower alt).
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

just thought id mention that its a lot easier to de ack and such when eneme ack is given more than one target to shoot at. try to time your run to arive in range of the guns just as freindly targets are leaving range this also minimizes fire you will take as you de ack

a gamey trick which i dont endorse is to have someoen drop troops at 8k over feild and de ack while the guns try to kill troops. youll never take a hit unless manned ack is shooting at you.

usualy its the manned ack that i worry about moreso than auto

If you'd like you can follow me some time, gotten good at porking and de-acking air fields. come in with some altitude and pick a line that requires you to fly through as little ack possible. I fly as a Bish.

Regarding "de-acking" -- Mowing the grass style.

Base ack/flak is significantly less accurate when you come in on the deck. The guns fartherst away from you cant hit you if you are very very low. They also take longer to acquire you and start firing. Only some of the guns can get convergence on you at any one time. As opposed to coming in high where ALL the guns get convergence on you at once.

After studying the airfield maps and practicing your approaches you will be familiar with where the ack is located on your pass. The path you pick is very important. Avoid crossing more than 50% of the field at any one time.

I come in very fast at around 400 mph right on the deck. I want to get as close as possible before they open up. You can get inside d600 to the first ack before they fire if you are right on the deck missing trees. Follow your practiced path and exit on the deck. I try to make the exit around a hanger or some hill or drop off. I also use the base structures as shields while flying across the base. You can also enter using a hanger as a shield.

To do this effectivly you must be very familiar with the base layout and have practiced a balllls to the wall - hammer down - mowing the grass flight path without hitting the deck, trees, or buildings.

And its a lot more fun this way. hehe.

Thanks guys.  I'll practice the low approach too.  It seems reasonable that if you can block some ack with hangers etc you'd be safer.
