Iphone simcard question
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:40:41 AM »
Just got a hold of one of these bricks. Its the standard GSM simcard and I recycled my Simcard from my cingular phone and it works - but there does not seem to be a method to transfer the numbers that I downloaded from my old phone to the SIM onto the IP. Any ideas how to go about this, or are we supposed to fat finger everything back in again?

I couldn't figure it out myself, I just re-did everything manually. I got rid of my Iphone after a few weeks. I went back to my Blackjack. Everything about using the Iphone is just a bit clunky to me. Maybe if you trolled some of the cell phone forums you can find a way to transfer your sim info over.

Yea best I can find is by dumping them into outlook and then syncing contacts from there. And that requires using the old phone to even see the numbers. ****ing retarded. Its a 10 year old implementation they left out.

iPhone (AKA iFlop) has a laundry list or problems... I played with this phone about 2 hours (my cousin bought one first day) In that time I learned:

You must be tethered to a wireless LAN to do the you tube stuff
You must subscribe to iTunes monthly for the phone to be active
You must ship the phone back to apple if the battery dies... User cannot replace it.
No wired headset jack
You cannot add memory to the phone
You cannot add your own personal mp3s to the phone... Itunes only
No instant messenger software
No VPN or corporate mail like most PDAs
Camera takes stills only, no video
No picture messaging... you can take pics but you cannot send them via MMS lol
No over the air music downloads, again tethered to iTunes
Google maps just gives you a map, no gps or gps via bluetooth support
Insurance not available for this phone
loudspeaker is mono only
no USB for downloading
no using the iFlop as an external HD
No editing or creating office files, just view them
Not even one game on the thing
You cannot save email attachments to view later
EDGE only - NO 3G!

Now the SIM card debacle! LOL Damned Slackintosh!

Couple notes from the last 3 hours of screwing with this thing.

I can do custom ring tones - you just need to know what to screw with. In which case, I defer to this little program which works quite nicely.

http://www.efksoft.com/products/iphoneringtonemaker/index.htm

I don't know about the monthly phone home thing - but guess we'll see.
Copy on the battery
Rgr on memory, but you got 8 gigs. Still, no SD is kinda irksome.
Camera haven't screwed with yet
Pictures I email - no issue there.
Will see if I can stream something live like an ATC site. Safari can't seem to figure out how - gimme 24 hours to chew on and i'll have something.
I found a VPN and Exchange Server settings - actually have gmail and aol linked and Exchange. Will try VPN to Naval Post Grad tomorrow
Youtube worked fine btw without Wifi. I streamed the Virtual Blue Angels 2006 season showing with little fuss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VivFXJPeNSs

I'm working off a USB now - dunno what thats about.
Games I can find - just gotta work around the great wall of Apple and burn the book of Jobs.

The sim card really pissed me off though. Spent 2 hours putting **** into outlook which I really didn't want to do - but now its done.

My iPod is absolute rubbish and iTunes is a joke.

Apple will be getting no more money from me.

They take things that should be simple and try to force you to use their chitty programs. Are they hoping that we'll renounce our PCs and swear allegiance to Apple?

With products like the iPod and iTunes..... not bloody likely.

Ok, I own one, havent modded it or anything, so I need to correct you a bit here

1. Youtube works either over EDGE or WLAN. However if you use EDGE it uses a crappier codec to speed the download up, so it doesnt look as good. Over WLAN it runs great, obviously.

2. I dont know what you mean by subscribe. You do need to have an Itunes acct, but there is no monthly charge. If you buy songs obviously there is.

3. Yes, if the battery goes, it gets shipped back. Luckily hasnt happened to me yet. I havent heard much in the way of battery nightmares.

4. The phone has a stereo headset jack on top. The earbuds it comes with have a built in microphone as well so you can use them to answer calls as well as listen to music. This might be about the best thing for phone calls while driving ever - the call comes in stereo, (well, mono over both sides) so you get ultra-clear reception. The mic works well.

5. No, you cant add memory. 8gb has been more then enough for me.

6. You can ABSOLUTELY add your own mp3s to the phone. It works just like an ipod. I wouldnt have gotten it otherwise. Just drag them into itunes. Very easy.

7. There is instant messanger software you can use using safari. Which isnt too good right now. When they release the SDK in feb I'm hoping for a good downloadable client.

8. There is a way to set the email up for different accounts and I'm pretty sure there is the option to connect to a vpn as well. Just havent tried it yet. It works seamlessly with my gmail account.

9. Yes, no video capture ability. I miss this too.

10. MMS picture mail is possible but its strange.. you have to email the pic to the other persons cell #. Another feature im waiting for the SDK to fix.

11.  No, you cant wirelessly update it. Not sure what kind of feature you're looking for. I guess itd be nice but connecting it to usb to update isnt so bad.

12. No gps function. However there is an addon you can purchase that adds something using cell tower triangulation. I wouldnt even bother with that. The google maps function is very useful as it is. I was once driving back from foxwoods and my friend used the phone to find all golf stores along the highway so we could buy new drivers. Pretty sweet. I guess if you're a moron and can't figure out with just a map where you are then the gps built in would be nice.

13. There is some form of apple insurance they offered me but it sounded like a gimmick. I guess I dont worry about it too much.

14. Yes the speaker is mono. Its pretty basic. However, this is the size of a wallet. Its not a boombox.

15/16. There is a usb connection to the computer using the standard ipod cable. Not sure again what you're looking for. Not sure if theyve added the support to use the phone as a removable hard drive but I guess thats coming if it hasnt yet.

17. Yea you cant edit office files. But it can view them nicely, and it also have native PDF support too. I wouldn't want to be doing that kind of work on a phone to begin with.

18. The games are on apples website using the safari program. Not great for now, another thing Im waiting on the sdk for.

19. Since there isnt much of a file structure no you cant save email attachments. Tho I think that if theyre in your email acct they stay locally. Not sure to be honest.

20. EDGE sucks, but its not terrible. I might sell mine to get the 3G one next summer or whenever it comes out.

MrNoName it sounds like you might not understand what the iPhone is. Its not a business device. They dont market it for that type of user. Its great for the casual person like myself. Obviously you didn't spend enough time with the device as you don't even seem to know what the features are.

Which is fine, because everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm more then happy with mine.

If you have any luck, let me know. Thats one feature I'm waiting for. Maybe after they add flash support this spring. My brother plays hockey at BC and sometimes I'd like to stream the internet broadcast instead of being tied to my computer for away games.

I spent 2 hours with it... I know my cousin bought his the first day and that it was NOT worth the $700+ he forked over for it.

The EDGE data rates at least around here were insufficient for youtube use back during the summer when it was released.

ATT Told him that he MUST subscribe to iTunes for the phone to remain active when he purchased it.  He gave me the instruction sheet that came with it.

My complaints about this device stem from its' MARKETING as a multimedia powerhouse but then, in spite if its' price, drops the ball on key features.  If you are going to have its' superiority in a category as a selling point, then by all means it should have had video capture, 3G connectivity, standard on the fly MMS messaging, Stereo speakers (Those are available on many lower priced phones)  The iPhone he had had no 2.5mm jack or mini USB port as is standard on most PDA phones for headsets.  I am not such an idiot that I cannot buy a map and read it if i don't know where I am going BUT here again MARKETING for this device featured the google maps function, etc...  Why no GPS or some of these other little inexpensive features to make this the $700+ home-run hitter is was supposed to be? That is my entire point.  PDA/Multimedia phones use a LOT of battery power - You do not have the option of simply dropping in a spare battery when yours runs low.  If you DO have a problem with your battery (And I hope you never do) Do you want to be without your phone for at least a week (bare minimum) for an issue you could otherwise resolve within minutes with a visit to your local wireless store?

The comment that I just didn't understand sounds like a page from the "Apple Marketing School" textbooks. :D

Mr No Name, your list is pretty dang inaccurate.  You don't have to like the phone, but please don't make assertions about things you don't know, especially if they're false.

Moose's response is pretty spot on, I would have written something much the same if he hadn't beaten me to it.

I like my iPhone just fine.  In fact, I've decided that of all the phones I've had, it's my favorite (and I _really_ loved my 6190 that I had modded the heck out of years ago).

Your list sounds...  like you've taken personal offense at the existence of the phone.   It's oddly vehement, not sure where all that emotion comes from.  It's just a phone, it's not an illegal immigrant or democrat or anything.  Maybe some perspective is in order.

Also, the phone costs $400, not $700.  Your info is...  quite a bit out of date.  This week or next a new firmware is coming out that uses cell tower triangulation to figure location, not too shabby.  Few phones get new features pumped out to customers for free after they're released.

chair, it WAS 700, i saw the receipt... like i said it was a first day purchase.  there have been software upgrades already - thats a good thing.

I dont dislike the fact the phone exists, in fact, I was going to go buy one but after playing with the phone 2 hours with the materials that my cousin was given to assist me, thats what I ran into. Please remember this was an 8GB, Day 1, first release version of phone software.

ALL I am saying is that at that point the hype did not meet either what I expected or hoped for.  Maybe in fairness I should have posted what I LIKED about the phone as well, such as:

really LARGE screen and Screen clarity
Looks amazing
smooth touch navigation
good camera quality
threaded text messages - (most common-sense difference fom windows mobile6)
Wifi was problem-free
The sub-applications in the phones UI work very well together

Those listed above probably were my favorite things about the iPhone... STILL - to ME - It didn't meet its' marketing hype!

When the next generation of iPhone comes out, I am willing to bet it will have many of those things corrected, frankly after i anticipated the iPhone release, I was just plain let down.  Let's see what the next set looks like.
