The Final Battle Against REAL ID Has Begun
« on: February 08, 2008, 09:49:29 AM »
Some states have thus far REFUSED to comply....

A true grassroots rebellion against REAL ID is forming. So far, 17 states have
passed laws or resolutions rejecting REAL ID: Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia,
Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New
Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.

Twenty-one other states have either introduced legislation or had legislation
pass in one chamber opposing REAL ID.

Hmmm I don't see Kalifornia on there?

IMHO National ID = NOT WANT!
It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

I blame Congress.  If Congress had not gotten away with jamming this law into an existing funding bill for Iraq/Tsunami relief back in 2005 and there was real debate on the issue it never would have passed.  By that time people had wised up to the administration's 9/11 paranoia.

If the federal government wanted to require US passports for commercial flights or entry to federal buildings I would be OK with that.  But the REAL-ID law is stupid and a waste of time.

Roger that Sandy. I too have one of those little books and it has been real handy in foreign countries where I might need ID.

(heh, didn't notice this thread before I posted my Real ID one...  reposting here to consolodate the conversation...)

How Will Read ID Affect You?
Quote
Q: Does Homeland Security have the authority to do that kind of expansion, or can only Congress expand Real ID?
Homeland Security has the authority. The text of the law says that, starting May 11, "a federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a state to any person unless the state is meeting the requirements of this section." Official purpose is defined to include "any other purposes" that Homeland Security thinks is wise.

The potential list of "purposes" could be long. Real ID could in theory be required for traveling on Amtrak, collecting federal welfare benefits, signing up for Social Security, applying for student loans, interacting with the U.S. Postal Service, entering national parks, and so on.

Q: What about buying firearms?
That's an open question. Homeland Security last month refused to rule out requiring Real ID for firearm purchases in the future.

When asked about requiring Real ID to buy a firearm, Homeland Security replied: "DHS will continue to consider additional ways in which a Real ID license can or should be used and will implement any changes to the definition of 'official purpose' or determinations regarding additional uses for Real ID consistent with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. DHS does not agree that it must seek the approval of Congress as a prerequisite to changing the definition in the future."

The typical libertarian response to Real ID is to go off about how it's a gateway to a "Papers, please!" society, heading down the road to facsism and all that.  I just don't know anymore...  Does anyone care?  Are we the "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" or are we the "Land of the Safe, Home of the Compliant"?

First step on the slippery slope "down to the ant heap totalitarianism" is that sort of giving in to adversity, in this case to something you know is wrong.  Something wrong is still wrong no matter how big a bandwagon it generates.

They have laws on the books to get rid of the wetbacks now. Many don't follow them, they just pick and choose which laws they want to enforce.
Here in Houston they are getting ready to train officers to check legality of individuals here..... finally. Federal IDs.... I don't see where they won't be copied just like state IDs.
