Any way it made no never mined to me killed it nun the less. Iv bean playing in battlefield trying the free trial and there are no icons on GVs only on the air craft, and those show only the type and don’t even do that till less then or about 1 mile. As far as I’m concerned the Icon is just a useless way for ppl to get easy kills, and as the game is set up to favor the air units any way killing the Icons should not matter and may improve the game speed a little.

Even with an axis vs. allies setup, no icons would actually be less realistic.

You have better depth perception and ability to discriminate objects at a distance in real life than on a computer screen.

Go down to your local airport, on a clear cool day you can usually tell whether it's a Cessna or a Mooney, color, etc, at 5000+ feet. In AH, planes are just dots at 3000 feet.

Now something we might consider is making the icon distance shorter, like 3K, in all arenas. I've also thought it might be an interesting idea to make the icon "blend" into the surrounding sky/earth/water except at short distances, say beyond 1.5-2K, instead of being bright red all the way. It would still be legible, but you would have to *look* to spot their plane. Don't know how hard this would be to engineer though.

BnZ,

Negative on that shorter icon range.  I've played "chase the dot" enough already.  You spend 5-10 minutes chasing a dot that is running from a dot only to find out you're both on the same side when you finally get to icon range.  It bites and is boring.  In reality humans with 20/20 vision or better can make out surprising levels of detail at 6,000 yards.

Next time you fly and have a window seat, watch the ground and see how much you can make out as the airliner climbs and cruises, assuming you have good vision.

That is a point about icon distance. But what about the idea of a more "blended" color icon at longer distances? Like how friendly icons look sometimes when they have the fog effect turned up...legible, but kind of faded, not real noticable. I've ridden in a light plane quite abit, you can indeed make out traffic at quite a distance once you spot it, but they don't jump up and scream "here I am!" the way a crimson icon does.

Another thing...I think there should perhaps be some sort of indication of whether you are approaching a plane's head or tail. A small arrow or the like. I can't tell whether they are coming or going even with zoom at ~1000 with some planes (especially P-38s and 110s for some reason), and closure rate as a clue can be decieving. It sucks to get HOed when you thought you were in a tail chase, or to abort what turns out to be a  clean bounce on a 110's tail.

Didn't WWII Online have an icon system similar to this?  The longer you "looked" at the dot, the brighter the icon info would become.    Take your attention away, and the icon would gradually fade away.

Interesting system compared to the on/off system based on distance we have in AH.
