I say go for the 7600GS, if given that choice.

Man, don't know where you're getting your info, but 6800GT versus 7600GS is simple.  6800GT will kill it in every way.  Dude, not to be a jerk, but you're giving people bad information as far as the 7600GS is concerned.  7600GS is a low end budget card.  The 7600GT is decent, about on par with a 6800GS.  GS might be just a tad better because of it's higher memory bandwidth and so forth.  Unlock the 6800GS and there's no contest.
No offense, but I hope this guy didn't follow your advice.
Seriously man, check your info.  It's way wrong.

As I said in another post, the XT, LE, SE versions of Nvidia cards indicate they are extremely low end cards in the order of $30-$40 and only meant for basic computer use.  They are not performers by any stretch.  And to use the 6800XT as a contender with the 7600GS is just wrong.  ALL XT, LE, and SE cards are crap.  In ATI's case, they are good.

A faster GPU on a video card means absolutely nothing if it doesn't have fast memory and high memory bandwidth.
That's why there are higher end videocards with lower GPU locks, but higher memory clocks and memory bandwidth that will CRUSH cards with higher GPU clocks.  GPU clock means nothing really in the scope of things.

Vertex, get the 6800XE out of your head.  It's a crap card.  It's not meant for performance.  The 6800GS and GT are the versions you want to conside.  Those cards will blow away any of the 7100's, 7300's, and 7600's (except maybe for the 7600GT).

ANY Nvidia that ends in XE, XT, SE, or LE is junk.  Absolute crap.
GS is ok, depending on the card.  A 6800GS or 7800GS, for example is  GREAT card.  The GT, GTS, GTX, and Ultra Extreme versions are the top performers.

In order to gain some type of performance, stop thinking you can get away with spending $100 bucks or less.  Try more like $150, and then you'll start to get into respectable performance ranges.

In this case, the 7600GS is more powerful than any of those cards, but itself is not a performer by any stretch.

Ive read these cards run hot, is that a problem.

I have an AMD athlon 3000+ processor with 1gb of pc3200 ram, and a fx5700le video card.

Is it worth spending 68 bucks to get the 6800XE?

Whats the best video card for the buck on my system?

How high can I go before the processor or memory needs upgrading?

I am interested in performance for AHII only.

I dont want to spend a lot on high end stuff that is beyond AHII requirements

Please Help

Thanks.

Probably redundant to say this, but there are HUGE differences between the XE and GT/GS versions.  ANYTHING from Nvidia ending in XT, XE, SE, or LE is JUNK.  JUNK I TELL YOU!  JUNK!  This suffix means it's budget card meant for basic computer use.  And as far as 6800 GS's running hot: what manufacturer?
Some companies like to skimp on the heatsink and fan, and clock the card a tad lower.  However, BFG is quite respectable and have never had any issues with any of their 6800GS/GT cards, especially when it comes to cooling.

Whoa, dude. SERIOUSLY... don't reply 4-5 times in a row.

The 7600GS has a faster clock core, memory core than the 6800 XT, it has more texture units on the card, an extra vertex pipeline, 50% more fragment pipelines, performs twice as many shader operations, 150% as many pixels get filled, twice the texture fill rate, and almost tiwce the vertex operations of the 6800 XT AGP.

These numbers you can look up yourself. Please do.

The 7600 GS may not totally blow the 6800 XT away, but it's a damn sight better. You're underestimating a very handy card.

Well, please explain my 10-20FPS increase by unlocking the pipelines in my standard XFX 6800 if the 6800GS is the only one capable of it.

Here's how it used to be. It's probably changed.

The 6800 Ultras were the cards with extra pipelines. A lot of these boards were built but used as other cards (6800s, non-ultras), so you could go ahead and re-enable the pipelines.

However, there was no guarantee that these would open, and usually there were other minor differences between these boards and fullblown ULTRA boards.

After a while of folks unlocking things, some boards started showing up with the physical pipeline pathways LASER CUT (at the factory) so that they could not be opened up at all.

You should *never* buy a card expecting to be able to unlock it. If you can, it's icing on the cake. If not, you have to be willing to like the card as-is ("from the box"), just in case.
