2 problems with getting machine going
« on: February 18, 2008, 06:10:56 PM »
1. On my new machine, sometimes I hit the power button and the power comes on for a second and then quits. Other times it comes on with no problems.

2. I started loading xp and then in the middle it tells me that my hard drive has an error. Now I when it does start I get "Error Loading Operating system".

Any advice on these two issues. I somehow believe they are related. I think both of these harddrives have errors. It seems the power problem starts when I plug on or the other in after attempting to use the first.

Thanks in advance.

You didn't say what you've done or if they were SATA drives but I'm guessing you're using your old IDE drives. I hope you did a back up of your important data and software preferences before you started.

Could be some BIOS settings, there's usually a 'safe default' menu item you can use to automatically configure the basic safe settings to get up and running.
I don't know your level of knowledge, so if these are your old IDE drives, you'll need to make sure the master/slave jumpers are correct for your new buss, pick one of the drives for the OS, reformat, and do a clean install of the OS on the new machine. Once running you can install the second drive (where you saved all your data) and it should be seen by the OS.

It's really hard to say without knowing what you've done/are doing, so this is just the basics. There are lots of places to go wrong. After re-reading your post, I suspect the BIOS settings, see if you can find that safe default option.

It's SATA drives. I have to try your idea tomorrow.

I can't remember if you got new sata drives or were using older ones. If they're older sata drives, then the thing to check, is what speed your sata drives are. the new mtb controller is probably 3.0gb, and if your sata drives, are not 3.0gb capable, then they might not run correctly.

If you continue having problems, get in touch with me the next time we're online with the squad and I'll see what I can do to help.

Appreciate that Wabbit. I have the problem solved. I had to put in another ps and I purchased a new harddrive. Everything is running very well.

Sure took some effort though.
