Nvidia 9600GT issues
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:25:38 PM »
I’m having a bit of a problem.  I have a Dell XPS/Windows XP SP2 that I use in conjunction with TrackIR 4 and Saitek X52pro and pedals.  The original video card was an Nvidia 6800 (just straight 6800, not GT, GTO, etc.) with 265M RAM.  The computer had one G of RAM.

This has been a pretty good setup for AH with only a few problems.  There were occasional stutters in the usual situations (lots of AC, low alt, smoke, etc.) which were not too disturbing but I wanted to get rid of them.  Frame rates were usually around 60 dropping to 30-45FPS low down.  More significant for me was that I had stutters with TIR as I looked around.  This seemed to be more of a problem when flying aircraft with “birdcage” canopies with numerous canopy bows and this happened all the time.  It was distracting to have TIR stutter as different bows moved into view.  I was running with your recommended settings including Anti-aliasing off, no pre-loading of textures, etc., and just accepted the problems I mentioned but finally decided to upgrade with the new Nvidia 9600GT / 512MB and maxed out my XPS with 4GB RAM.

With AA off and the card set to Performance vice Quality settings (most of the fancy card features off) I actually have more problems than with my previous set up.  I ensured I have the latest Nvidia drivers and have tried overclocking the 9600 (to 750MHz core/975MHz memory) and, while the card runs fine and is stable I still have what is, at best, only equal to what I had before and many times worse.  I still have TIR stutters (I've tried setting TIR priority to "higher than normal").  Any suggestions?

A couple of possibilities come to mind:

1>  Power supply.. might just not be strong enough for your video card, especially if it's the original one (Dell isn't known for providing the best power supply with their units)

2>  Processor... this is a generation or two old, and although 3.4GHZ is very quick, this isn't known to have the best performance

3>  HEAT... these processors are known for getting very, very hot, and if there is any junk packed into the heatsink, or if the fan isn't functioning 100%, you're going to have problems.  Add in the extra load from the uber video card, and you may be just asking for problems.

YES, the 32 bit edition of XP will only recognize up to 3 gigs of ram.

I also experience micro-stutters when coming into view of many planes at once... I'm kind of assuming it's due to hard drive access, pulling skins files up, but it happens so quick it's not usually an issue

Thanks a bunch for the inputs guys.

The 3G limit is a head slapper.  Original documents, the Dell upgrade website etc., all say up to 4G (which I guess is technically correct).  The DOS setup during boot shows 4G but I see the System Properties and DXDIAG show 3070MB.  Lucky RAM is so cheap otherwise I'd be pissed.  I will remove 1G to see if that has any impact but I'd have to assume that XP is just going to ignore it anyway.  Here's the fine print from the manual:  Your computer supports a maximum of 4 GB of memory when you use four 1-GB DIMMs. Current operating systems, such as Microsoft® Windows® XP, can only use a maximum of 4 GB of address space; however, the amount of memory available to the operating system is less than 4 GB. Certain components within the computer require address space in the 4-GB range. Any address space reserved for these components cannot be used by computer memory.  Quite frankly this means nothing to me but the DXDIAG only shows 3G.

Heat does not seem to be a problem at all.  The XP CPU has a pretty good dual fan cooling design with large radiator (a clean one at that) and shroud over the CPU.  Both CPU fans work well as well as do the three other case/PS fans and, although there are no temperature reporting for the CPU, I've never had any stability problems.  The graphics card temps are actually fairly low even though I've overclocked it.  I ran a stress test for 6 hours (with and without the overclocking) and had no reported problems and temps stayed well in line.  Stutter is present when I first start AH and gets no worse during extended periods of play so it just doesn't seem to be heat related.

The XP's power supply is fairly decent at 460W.  Minimum PS wattage required for the 9600GT is 400W.  The system is basically stock but I do run both an X52Pro, Rudder Pedals, and TrackIR via the stock USB ports.  I seriously doubt they suck a lot of wattage.  Again, I had no problems during the 6 hour stress test.  What other indications would I see indicating I'm maxing out the PS?

As I've looked for potential issues, I did not remove the original 6800 drivers.  The install program for the 9600 drivers implied it removed the old drivers as part of the new install, how do I check this and remove them manually if necessary?

Hi Mace,

How about this:
Preload textures into memory at start of game.
Set AA @ 4x to push the card a little more. Sometimes they run better at higher settings.
Disable any anti-virus software running.
Reduce sound hardware acceleration by one notch in DxDiag.
Try using FSAutostart to free up system resources and launch AH. Configure it to shut down unneeded programs and services and then restart per the advice given during mouseover of each running program or service. You then launch it, it will shut down everything as configured, then launch AH. I'm not sure, but Dell may load up some extra applications that could be reducing performance.

You can try some of these, and revert back if you don't find any improvement.

I would suspect you are CPU limited and that's why upgrading your graphics card didn't help much.  I have a 2.8GHz P4 (only a bit slower than yours) and upgrading from a very old ATI 9600XT graphics card to a much faster 7600GT did not improve fps at all under most circumstances.  Like me, I suspect you are CPU limited.

(By the way, it says "2 processors" but that is a lie.  The P4 had something called Hyper Threading (or something like that) that tried to make a single processor act like two.  It was essentially all hype and useless.  It has only a single processor.)

Mace,
Google search Driver Cleaner its free. Also with 3g of RAM your memory is in single channel in stead of duel channel, performance hit. 2 or 4 sticks of same memory duel channel. 1 and 3 or any mixed memory single channel.

TB has an intersting question.  I have 1g in each of the four slots although I'm going to try to get to it today to try pulling 1g so I have 3g total.  However, I have two 512MB from the original installation.  Which is better?

--Leave in all four 1G DIMMs knowing XP only sees 3G?
--Remove 1G leaving 3 1G DIMMs in slots 1,2 and 3?
--Leave 2 1G DIMMs in slots 1/3 and 512MG DIMMs in slots 2/4?
OR
--just settle with 2 1G SIMMS in slots 1/3?

BTW, I downloaded Driver Cleaner and it worked great.  Looks like all my old drivers are vaporized but I haven't had a chance yet to check performance.  Maybe the old drivers we causing the issues.

I've tried AA set to 4x (and also tried 2x) as Rolex suggested but its worse and so AA is back to off.  TB got me last night but that was only due to ahhh....stutter.  Yeah, that's it!

I have anti-virus off and use FS but doesn't seem to make much difference.
