17 hours now
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:12:08 PM »
Without a cigarette. My best attempt at quitting prior to this, I made it 8 hours before I was ready to kill someone. Not doing to bad, figure if I can make it through the first 24 hours I'll be golden.

Seriously...Heres the trick to it.  Get sick.  Violently sick, and it makes the first 24 hours go by much easier....

It's all mind over matter too.  It's not going to be easy.  You are physically and mentally addicted.  I would tell myself "Mike, I really want a cigarette right now, but it's not worth it if by having that cigarette, it means having lung cancer and dead by 50".

SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF YOURSELF HEALTH WISE.  IF YOU KEEP SMOKING YOU WILL DIE A PAINFUL DEATH OF CANCER AND ABANDON YOUR LOVED ONES!  (extreme, but this is what worked for me....)  Scare the crap out of yourself.

goodluck.

Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Hang in there, it's worth it. I smoked for over 40 years before I quit.

I quit last April 5th. I used chantex ( I think that's how you spell it ) and it helped a lot. I still want one now and again but everytime I'm near someone who still smokes it really makes me glad I quit.  House and suroundings smell much better now and the food tastes great!

My girlfriend's mother tried Chantix and had some real depression issues from it.

She's still trying, using something else.

Keep at it, Elfie.  How old are you and how long had you smoked?

Hang in there...your lungs, heart and rest of your body will thank you.

Per a smoking censation class i took, it takes 3 days to rid yourself of the nicotine addiction, approx. 3 weeks to get rid of the habit portion,(i.e. having something in your hand or mouth, having a smoke with your coffee, lighting up right after getting in the car etc.) and phycologically it is different for each person. Some lose the sensation in a short period, others will live with it the rest of their lives.

Good Luck

i quit smoking about 3 years ago after about a decade of heavy smoking  bout pack and a half too two packs a day at the end and i feel for ya.  It was probably one of the hardest things i have done.  Sometimes i still get the urge to smoke.  Sometimes it is a smell or something i used to smoke while doing that brings it on.    I know that if i had just one i would be right back smoking heavily again, and that keeps me from starting cause i think about how hard i worked to quit in the first place.  Good luck to you i hope you make it.

Stop Smoking
Recovery Timetable

Your body's ability to mend is beauty to behold!

Within ...

20 minutes
Your blood pressure, pulse rate, and the temperature of your hands and feet will all return to normal.

12 hours
Your blood oxygen level will have increased to normal and carbon monoxide levels will have dropped to normal.

48 hours
Damaged nerve endings have started to regrow and your sense of smell and taste are beginning to return to normal.

72 hours
Your entire body will test 100% nicotine-free and over 90% of all nicotine metabolites will now have passed from your body via your urine.  You can also expect the symptoms of chemical withdrawal to have peaked in intensity.  Your bronchial tubes are beginning to relax thus making it easier to breathe. Your lung capacity has also started to increase.

10 days to 2 weeks
Your body has physically adjusted to again functioning without nicotine and the more than 3,500 chemical particles and 500 gases present in each and every puff.

2 weeks to 3 months
Your heart attack risk has started to drop. Your lung function is beginning to improve.

3 weeks to 3 months
Your circulation has substantially improved. Walking has become easier. Your chronic cough, if any, has likely disappeared.

1 to 9 months
Any smoking related sinus congestion, fatigue or shortness of breath have decreased. Cilia have regrown in your lungs thereby increasing their ability to handle mucus, keep your lungs clean, and reduce infections. Your body's overall energy has increased.

1 year
Your excess risk of coronary heart disease has dropped to less than half that of a smoker.

5 to 15 years
Your risk of stroke has declined to that of a non-smoker.

10 years
Your risk of death from lung cancer has declined by almost half if you were an average smoker (one pack per day).  Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus has now decreased.

15 years
Your risk of coronary heart disease is now that of a person who has never smoked.

I used Chantix and quit but I had some serious stomach problems with it. About 2 weeks after I stopped taking it I started smoking again.
But to be honest, I was never really positive about quitting.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Elfie Salute Bro.......after 35 years of smoking 1 - 2 packs perday, I stopped last May, with the aid of Chantix.  Good stuff but expensive, but then consider how much you spend monthly for smokes and it all works out.

Is it easy .........NO!  I didn't realize you could operate a vehicle without first lighting up (lol).  Then there's the meal...........how else do you get that total satisfaction of a fine meal without lighting one up?  It's been a tuff time, I miss my relaxasion of the "Smoke".

Should you need someone to vent, looking for support, or just looking for someone that has been there and done that.........you are more than welcome to PM me.  Don't be bashfull......now is the time for support Bro.  Good luck, I hope for you the best.

That's one of the big things RPM.  You MUST be ready.  I was ready when I started.  One of the downfalls of Chantix is that with some it hits in the belly.......sick.   My wife couldn't deal with it, hence gave up.  Reduce the amount of intake.  Plus YOU MUST begin accordingly to prescription........ie....... ..let your system get used to the drug.  For some,........no matter what........it hits them in the belly.  I found if I eat first, then take the drug.....it was all good.  The other thing I learned is folks would drop the Chantix program after 6 weeks (according to what they said).  Yet the Doc's would say minimum 6 months.  I stuck with it for 6 months and all is OK.  Maybe I'm one of the few, mayby I was ready........who knows.

To those that wish to quit.........more power to you.  I wish you the best and offer my email address to you as support.
