Nothing wrong with the new sporties.  The older ones, yes you got vibration.  The new ones are rubber-mounted.  I had a '06 XL1200C Sportster and had no complaints about vibration.  I traded it in on a '07 FXSTC (Softail Custom) which has a frame-mounted engine but is internally balanced.  Both are very smooth running.

If you like Harleys, I suggest getting one.  Two of my closest friends recently got metrics, one a Suzuki boulevard and one a Honda VTX.  Both are very nice bikes.  The Suzuki got traded recently for a '08 XL1200C Sportster and he wishes he had gotten it in the first place.  He's already got the chrome bug and is working extra to buy more stuff for it.  When I put his Rush pipes on it, he almost fell out when I cranked it...Harleys with a good set of pipes sound like nothing else.   The other guy with the Honda VTX is going to the HD dealer this weekend.

1998 Suzuki Intruder 1500cc Liquid Cooled. Very smooth up to 110mph, then, a bit bumpy. Getting it out now that the weather is nice.

LOL I was wondering who would be the first to say that.  Or paper boy bike....

I absolutely loved it when somebody said something like that to me when I had mine.   When we hit the road I would get next to them and rap it couple of times just to prod them into grabbing a handful of throttle.....then walk away from them.  Get to the next stop and tell them that the sporty has been Harley's street fighter since 1957.  They rev harder, corner better and will dust most other aircooled HDs.  I only had a stage1 on mine and I would pick the front wheel up in first and bounce it up in second.  Stock, it's a 1200cc and only weighs 550 lbs.  do the math.  Not bad for a girls bike, eh?  I took the ribbing in good humor, but some guys got pissed when I dusted them.

Though I have moved on to a bigger bike, I respect sportsters.  Bottom line: they are still a Harley, made of all metal.  No chrome-covered plastic.  And the value does not tank like some other bikes as soon as you drive off the lot.

Check out the performance specs.....and that is a carbureted sportster at that.  The '07 and newer are FI and faster.

Uhm... Friend was accelerating from traffic lights with his 1200cc Sporty and I was hanging with him with just partly opened throttle with FXD; both bikes are having S-E exhausts, jets and K&N filters. I could had easily beaten him at the lights and at the cornering too.

88 cu in Fxd 1/4 mile 13.5.  Carbed XL1200c is 12.9.  

.6 sec faster.


You may have a newer 96" which would obviously have better times.   It all really comes down to rider.  Was he experienced?  How much did he weigh?, etc.

just curious..  why a V twin?  Lots of jap bikes that are smoother and faster for less.

I am curious because I recall a honda add way back in the 60's that showed a gee wizz 4 cyl honda motor and a splattered in oil and dilatpidated Harley knucklehead motor side by side asking if you wanted to be part of the old outdated past or the gee wizz wonderful future.   You would think honda would have flying cars by now...

Instead.. they (the japs) are all trying to build a V twin that sounds like and feels like a 1947 knuck.
