Anthlon 64 3200 Vs 4000 question

Currently running a 939 64 3200+ (venice)

Just ordered from Newegg  a Anthlon 64 4000+ (San diego)
Mostly cause it was a cheap $39.00 upgrade

LOL hard to beleive I was looking at this same chip for several hundred dollars a couple years ago.

Now looking at the comparison between the two
My current 3200 runs at a stock frequency of  mhz of 2000 (currently Oc'd to  2147) and has 512 L2 cashe

Where as the 4000 I just ordered
has a stock frequency of 2400 and has 1 MB of L2 Cache

Questions

Can I expect any in game performance improvement? Or do I now just have a spare CPU?
(I figger for $39.00 I cant go wrong either way)

Whats the difference between GHZ and MHz?

I dont see a comparison between the two CPUs

Most likely you'll notice little to no improvement. But the good news is that this CPU is late generation process which most likely means it will overclock easily. You can push some free Mhz out of it. Push it hard - if it breaks you still have the old one. 

That is, if you're familiar with basic rules of overclocking - small increments, back up everything, never overclock work computers or anything with business/family intensive stuff inside.

I have a 4000+ and have it running at 2.88GHZ with a good heatsink, made a noticable difference bot in benchmarking and in real use..

I was kinda hoping the extra 512 in the cashe would give me a little something at least
Oh well.

Actually it seems this motherboard wont let me overclock it too much. Too much and it simply wont boot LOL

Also has something called "CPU overheat protection"

I have a Giabyte K8 Triton GA-K8NSC-939

I specifically chose 939 because AT THE TIME it was the direction they were supposed to be going.
That lasted about a month. LOL

But hey. witha spare CPU I figure I can afford to play around.

Though I'll be happy if This just stops the game from locking up on me.

Anything business related I can just plop the HD in a different system
I still do all my book keeping by hand using good old paper anf pen(cant find a program that works the way "I" want it to work)
Any important but non sensitive stuff I store online.

Dred... I got an athlon 4600+ (Socket 939) for a workstation used off ebay for $76... you'd be AMAZED what dual core would do for you sir and it would most likely be a painless upgrade.

I know it's a cheap upgrade Dredlock on the amd. Still though, I would really consider an intel E2200 for 85 bucks. It's dual core and, I believe, runs cooler than an amd. It is way over clockable too. I think Skuzzy said he uses an e2150 clocked to 3 ghz.

I built my mom a computer with the e2200. Pretty sweet. But not like my E8400.

And I know I initially wanted a smaller budget on the build but.
Rather spend a little more now. Then end up upgrading again a year from now.
And the E8400 seems reasonably enough priced for the moment.

Course a year from now I will probqbly be able to pick one up for 3 cerial boxtops and a half dozen coca cola rewards points LOL

I just went from an Athlon 64 4000+ to an Intel Core Duo E8200 (its the 45nm 2.66Ghz CPU). Same vid card (7600GT). Wow what a difference in FSX    .  Board CPU and 2Gb of RAM cost me about US$300.

The best current chip is the E8400 the current dual core CPU's are probably the best (and cheapest) overclockable CPU's ever released bar exception of the celeron C300's. You can run a E8400 with a high end Air Cooler ($50) at 4Ghz without breaking a sweat.

Current prices for what you get are amazing, you can easily build a 4Ghz,4Gb Ram,9600 or 8800GT SLI based rig for under 1k. New CPU's have such low temps out the box that even water cooling for overclocking is now obsolete.
