Kursk - I had a blast!!
« on: August 26, 2000, 10:42:00 PM »
Before I start I'd like to thank Dazs for setting up and being the CM for a well run event last night.  Thanks also to the USSR team who put up an excellent defence and the CO's onz and sekiji.

30 minutes before the event was due to start Mitsu mentioned the Kursk event on channel 1 in the Main arena.  15 minutes later after looking at the announcements and reading the web page I was awaiting my orders in the Special Events Arena.  Assigned to the Luftwaffe I discovered that the majority of my fellow pilots appeared to be from an exchange program with the Imperial Japanese Army, (my Japanese is so much worse than their English I could only understood a few words).  My concerns deepened when Flight Leader Mitsu becan discussing a Kamikaze attack on the Russian city!!  This "to last man and last bullet" philosophy could save the mechanics a lot of time repairing aircraft =)

Fully fueled we launched our FW190's from our base and climbed into the early rising sun before heading to the target.  Reports from the 109 escort flight suggested we may arrive at the target early.  High above us black dots from the north resolved into a swarm of Yak fighters.  Sensing an easy victory several of the Yaks dived and scattered our flight.  Fortuneately the Yaks were compressing in their dives and 2 swept past without firing a shot.  I couldn't believe my luck as I cut power and picked one of the AAA sites at the city for a little attention.  The leading 190's were drawing the ground guns away from me and I managed to destroy one building before three of the Russians took expection to my presence.  The escorting 109's had arrived and were battling hard against a determined defence.

As I buried my parachute and prepared to evade the Russian ground troops I saw that Flight leader Mitsu had manged 3, then 4, then 5 kills in his suicide rush.  I later saw him driving an armoured half track back into battle with the kill frenzy still glittering in his eyes, (I pity the poor Russians as he destroyed nearly half their city in his rage =)

Rolling from our advanced base at field 9 and covered by several panzers I headed to the city.  Green in a lightly armoured half track distracted the T34's at the city long enough for me to sneak past and start shredding buildings.  Out of ammunition and taking fire I ditched the vehicle and headed back to base on foot.  Picking a Panzer and heading back to the city Mitzu had already arrived at and was now razing it to the ground.  The soon to be Tank Ace, chead was all that stood between me and the city.  As the third of nine victims in as many minutes my hat goes off to chead for his excellent skills.  From this point on the Russuans held their own in the ground battle despite thier city being a ruin and for the last 10 minutes of the scenario not a single russian building was destroyed.

On a personal note my only kill of the evening was after an intense tank duel with Max.  He had setup to the side of the track to the City and was doing well in slowing our advance.  I fired smoke rounds about his tank for cover so he charged down the hill and took 5 rounds before blowing up.  I wasn't watching the radio buffer and didn't see if Dazs called the cease fire before or after I fired the killing shot, (my film of the event crashes out after I bail out of my 190 so I have no way of checking what really happened).  If I fired after the bell my apologies.  Either way it was great fun.

If you haven't taken part in a Scenario before give it a go.  They are great fun.

WTFG Dazs, very nice scenario Saturday

I Take off as a USSR pilot with my Yak-3, in left advanced scouting position.
When we see the bandits, they where near our city, we dive thru the messy, and attack the 190, i was looking for a target when notice a 190 in the 6 of a friendly, i dive on him and shot 3 short burst, missing the target, i close until 80yds and open fire, the bandit lose tail and wing and goes down, 1 kill  .

I climb and start searching another target... a 109 engaged (clearing sixies = my destiny  ), dive, point, i was 1.0k closing when my engine had a failure (PC freeze and i had to power off manually  ).

I manage to take a T-34 and drive to the city, 4 109s were strafing, i stop in the main square and open fire, attracting the attention, the messie start strafing me, bullets pinging on my steel-made T-34, with a big grin on my face i shoot back with the AA 7-92mm MG, i damage one messie (got assist later), and down another, he ditched with engine on smoke at 300yds from me, the pilot stuck in cockpit, i slowly point the main gun at him and shoot... 1 kill  .

Then i move tho the West border of city and help the defence side by side with ons, our CO, killing 1 m-16 trying to sneack in city.

Great fun in the event, <S> Dazs, and <S> all the people in the event, waiting for the next one  .
