I see a bunch of people with Dr in front of their call sign. I was wondering how many doctors (Ph.D. or M.D.) play this game. I'm a Ph.D. myself.

COORS still play?  Heard he was a proctologist.

Schatzi is a vet...does that count? Course, she hasn't been seen for a month of sundays.

Falcnwing is a family doctor, and I'm a doc too. (Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Sleep Disorders). One of the AKs from a couple years ago was a math prof in Oklahoma.

Sim, I didn't know you were an MD!  A million years ago, when I was taking flying lessons, the instructors used to joke about how MD's made the worst pilots.   Since you are quite an excellent pilot, I am now doubly surprised.  :aok

I'm not an MD, just a Ph.D. in a whacky area called "computation and neural systems" (basically, a combination of neural networks, physics, and electrical engineering).  My MS is in applied physics, and a BSE in nuclear engineering, just to make sure I have an odd mix technology disciplines. :)

"Cause i got strange rash"

By the way, Sim, since you *are* an MD,  I've got this strange rash. . . .

Cool! Neural networking....definitely high brow stuff. Oh, and cut out the "just a PhD" crap! Anybody who's worked to build expertise in their field deserves lots of respect, and a PhD means enormous time and effort. I'm betting your work would make my head swim every bit as much as mine might make yours.

By the way, if you've got a background in nuclear engineering, you HAVE to check out the online comic "Nukees." Here's the first comic, from the Daily Californian in 1997. http://www.nukees.com/d/19970121.html (The art work and story lines get much better, don't worry.) Delightful running jokes and skewering of various engineering types, as well as the whole academic environment.

About flying - yeah, I've heard that too, way on the other side of the country...and from airline pilots and other docs alike.  Makes sense to me, too, because unfortunately there are way too many docs who A) think they know everything; B)don't like to take advice; and C) think they can do anything they want on first try. Arrogance doesn't do well when butting up against the hard laws of physics and the unpredictability of mother nature. Being a statistically oriented guy, when I found that civil aviation was relatively high risk way to travel, and that docs have a disproportionately dangerous flight record I decided to limit myself to AH. That way I can at least take off right after the auger!

By the way, Sim, since you *are* an MD,  I've got this strange rash. . . .

Unfortunately, penicillin no longer works for that....

Of all the people here who might benefit from occasional use of this topic, I think Roo is definitely on the list.  I was just over his house the other week and noticed that he had a big bandage on is finger (his little finger, fortunately).  "Jeez, Roo, did you break it?"  I ask.  He slides the bandage off and peers at his finger, frowning at it, and then pokes at it a bit with his other index finger.  "Nah," he says.  "I just cut the tip off."  It turns out he sliced it off at work, came home and tried to reattach it with duck tape, but finally went to the hospital after Mrs. Roo bullied him into it.  Fortunately, it was looking quite decent after proper treatment.

<< finished my PhD these days.

Now I can't wait for someone to yell: "my god! this man is having a heart attack, is anyone here a doctor?" and I can step forward and say "yes, I have a PhD in physics". It is not very useful but it is a good conversation topic with chicks  :D
