.50 Caliber rounds
« on: May 23, 2008, 09:59:34 PM »
I know, we have .50 Caliber rounds in the game, but think about it, couldnt the .50's in game be more realistic damage wise? the M3's .50 is a prime example. I was in an M3 one time, took about 25 rounds to down a Hog with it. 25 rounds should be enough to have killed it over at lest 2 or 3 times. Rarely ever do you hear of a plane taking 15 .50's and surviving, if you ever do hear it. Just wishing for a more realistic damage model for the .50's.

A gvs .50 M2 creates slightly less damage acording to the Analysis of Aces High Projetiles.

Edit: The AC .50 is equivalent to 1.1716 lbs of ord and the GV .50 is equivalent to 1.2500 lbs of ord. It probably doesn't affect it much but it could give you what you are seeing.

When you are asking for the .50s to be more effective you are asking for every other gun to also be more effective as the ratios are based on the .50 being the default value, as I understand it.  The Hispano's round is slightly more than a 3 to the .50's 1 because the US Navy said that an M2 20mm cannon (Hispano Mk II) instalation provided the same firepower as an instalation of three Browning .50 cals.  If you, say, double the .50s hitting power you also have to double the Hispano's hitting power to maintain the ratio.

Do you really want that?

In two separate instances, you could have put those 25 bullets in places where it made no apparent damage, and in another you could've TKO'd the hog a few times over.. Without film of the exact circumstances, it's just conjecture from anecdote.

It's all about bullet impact placement. Take a look sometime at .50 cal bullet ingress and (sometimes) exit holes on an airframe. You're saying that 25 of those bullets should be enough to "kill" a plane 2 or 3 times? I, or anyone else can place 25 of those holes on an airframe in such a manner that would not seriously impact even the flight envelope of the plane, let alone "kill" it 2 or 3 times.

Now yes if some of the bullets impacted in a concentrated area, then critical damage may occur. Sounds strikingly like what we already have ingame.

Huh?  Are you seriously saying that 8-12 50 cal strikes should be pretty much always lethal?  Much of an aircraft is little more than an aluminum sodo can stretched over a framework - you can punch holes in it all day without seriously impacting it until you cause it to delaminate or damage the structure behind it, or manage to hit a critical component.

And with respect to your example:
1) I doubt you have any real idea just how many times you hit the aircraft you were firing at - there's not much of a way to tell.
2) An F4U has a 1 ton hunk of iron and steel in the nose - you can hammer away on that for quite a while without resulting in fatal damage to the aircraft.  There is a good reason why the F4U continued in use as a ground attack platform for over a decade after the end of the war  - longer if you consider it's use by other countries.  Aim for the wingroots if he's approaching you nose on - those big honking wide wings come off much easier than the engine can be killed.

Round placement! Shoot in the right spot they go boom, wrong place they don't. I've come back from flights with so many holes in my plane i couldn't believe i was still flying with no damage indicated, then other times take 1 burst and lose half a wing or tail and go down.
You hit em in the right spot they are toast. :aok

I was told that all rounds were treated as a standard ball round in the game as far as the fighters were concerned. Not sure if that's true but that's what i was told a long time ago. I'd assume gv 50's, 30's and 20mm would be treated the same way.

My recollection of those old discussions is this:  Each round is a "hybrid" round that averages out the damage from the different munitions used in a standard belt.  So, if a "standard" for the .50s was to use two ball, two API and one incendiary, rather than actually model the guns/individual rounds that way, HiTech averaged the damage and made all five rounds the same.  To your point, he did the same with the German 20mms and any other "mixed belt" guns.

Eight 50 caliber rounds should bring down a fighter, consistently?  :lol
