This is what happens when you try to stop ISPs shaping/managing bandwidth. Someone has to pay for the infrastructure.

The cable companies are pushing for this.
I do know that it has been brought up in verizon's internal newsletter.
Not a direct quote but the gist is this:
Verizon will not be doing any metering of internet usage. We will let the cable companies meter theirs and when their customers leave them in droves Verizon will welcome them with open arms and absolutely no metered restrictions!! 

This includes Verizon's FIOS and Verizon's HSI (ie DSL service)

The main reason the cable companies and are going to the metered system is because (as the article states) they are structured differently meaning people "share" their bandwidth with everyone else. Personally I wouldnt use a cable co. for my internet even if it was free.....WAY to many issues

Also, I watch hi-quality streaming videos online, torrenting, and listen to internet radio with bit-rates higher than 192.  I can easily exceed Time Warner's 5 gb cap in just 2 weeks

Are you telling me that FIOS and DSL customers on the Verizon network do not share the company's bandwidth? Did you hit your head?

I fix cable issues everyday and have many, many happy customers. AT&T is launching a FIOS style product here in Tulsa and they are sinking millions in infrastructure. It will be a formidable competitor, don't get me wrong. But, to think that FIOS and DSL will be without problems is the dumbest thing I've heard in a very long time. Verizon has a great product. If cable goes metered, you will see all ISP's go metered.

Problem is Japanese Int'll bandwidth sucks, they're focussed primarily on local content.

And don't forget the japanese fuzzy out the squidgy bits on their pr0n.

That's all good but I really wish AT&T would refocuse on the short-comings of Uverse before any internet related projects.  I can't believe how far short Uverse comes compared to what I had with Time-Warner.

Del,  AH uses very little,  Gaming in general doesnt use much.

If you use 3rd party Vox like ventrilo it pushes it up a bit more but again as long as you arent downloading movies and porn 24/7 it shouldnt be a problem.

Coincidentally i received a letter this morning notifying me that my isp is now capping everyones broadband during the day. 

between 10am-3pm i can only d/l 1gb
between 3pm-9pm it's 0.5gb

with a maximum speed of 1MB.  i'm paying for 2MB broadband yet for 11hrs of the day the maximum speed i can achieve is 1MB!

They point out that other isp's charge you if you go over certain limits, but they're too nice to do a thing like that.  Oh gee! that's great!  instead they're stopping my internet all together, should i go over these newly imposed caps. 

If I hadn't cancelled already because i'm moving house in a couple of weeks i would do so now.
