Interesting thing about Starship Troopers was how they nervously danced around the most compelling theme in Heinlein's book.

Which theme did you find most compelling? The metaphore for the cold war or the sufferage dillema or ...?

Sufferage. I found the notion that only those who have invested something of themselves, and in turn have something to lose, should be allowed to vote, very compelling. (sorry, that's a clumsy sentence) Seemed to be an interesting solution to an age old dilemma. I'm sure you've seen this...

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years." Author Unknown

I don't recall the specific passages from the book, but I do know that had they been used in the movie verbatim, they would have caused a sh*t storm of public controversy.

What are your thoughts?

While Starship Troopers sucked, Dina Meyer made that movie worth watching.

No argument there. Denise Richards is gorgeous but IMO blah. Sort of like Grace Kelly was, stunning but blah. Dina however just oozes. ;)

I just caught starship troopers on cable last weekend for the first time since the theater. I must agree that the shower scene, and the "make that 20 minutes" scene were powerful and compelling. :aok :aok

One other observation. The were pitifully underarmed in the movie. I don't quite remember that from the book. Anytime you have to pump 50-100 rounds into a single enemy that also has massive numbers you simply must revert to the"nuke them from orbit" option. Or use heavy armor of much heavier air support.

Denise Richards was actually better than I remember, or at least not totally sucky. Though her talents would have been much better used in the shower scene, or her own special 20 minutes scene. Pity. Dina Meyer was able to steal the show there with her perky performances.
