Need some help identifiying a medal...
« on: June 21, 2008, 03:39:00 AM »
One of my cadets gave this to me, after saying he got it at a garage sale. He said it's a german war medal, but to find it at a garage sale in Hawaii makes me wonder. I know the pictures aren't good but theyre the best I could get. So, is it real? If so, what is it? And is it worth anything?

German medal from old East Germany.  Not worth much but maybe a hardcore collector.  They came in bronze, silver, and gold.  I'd bet that one is bronze.

Could be bronze, but looks gold to me. What exactly IS it? (I mean does it have a name?) and what was it issued for?

Only to somebody who wants it.  And if it's really gold it'll have "900" stamped on the rim.  Does it?

if you trust wikki, not all of the versions of gold have '900' stamped on it. I cannot find a '900' on mine though :(

Definitely post war. The best bet to find out the composition might be to take it to a jeweler and let them check it out.

Well, then it's just gilded bronze.

Fur True Dienst = For True Service

Natzional = National          Volk = People

It's definitely EAST German and post-WWII.

Notice the Soviet style ribblon (bottom triangle) and the Soviet flag icons.

The medal is East german from the mids 50s. It's for 15yrs of service in the National Peoples Army,Border troops and civil defense. It's bronze and worth about 40 bucks. :D The colors of the ribbon represent the years of service. Different colors for 10,15 & 20 years.
