Question about the 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS 404.
« on: July 02, 2008, 01:36:52 AM »
When im in a bomber, and i shoot the fighter, it always seems that he disables the Gunner. The fighter that usually kills me is a La-7, and those always have the 20mm Hispano rounds. There are pictures with a 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS 404 bullet hitting the Gunners front windshield and not making it through the glass, obviously the bullet screwed the gunners vision of seeing with these massive cracks all over the front windshield. But the Gunner kept firing his gun through the small areas were there weren't any cracks. Think of it as when your in a fighter and they hit your engine oil, you cant still half see with the blank spaces that haven't been smeared with oil. The same goes for the Gunner position, BUT, theres a catch i searched up 30mm bullets, and those didn't have a problem smashing through the glass and through the Gunner. So i was thinking anything under the damage of a 20mm bullet won't disable the Gunner, but anything past a 20mm is definitely bound to kill the Gunner.

Other than that, if they hit the GUNS that arm the Gunner position im pretty sure that could be the problem as well. The question was whether you guys agree or disagree. Going to sleep ill find your replies tomorrow, night.

La7s didn't use those but ShVAKs instead, below is a link to a good La page.

20mm bullet doesn't pass through the glass. Ok there is this occurance, but it still looks like the bullet went through, didnt the guy stick a screwdriver through it,
but even if it didnt there is no proof that this wasnt just a freak occurance, maybe the 20mm was fired very far away and lost a lot of velocity and just barely pierced the glass?  :D

The 20mm bullet usually wasn't an AP round which is what would be needed to take out a gunner, although, 2 strikes near the same place should be enough to shatter the glass...

Think of it this way, shootin a BB at a glass from 10-15 feet away wont break the glass, it might crack it, or chip it, but wont break it.

But, if you put 1 BB in, and another about .5 in away from the first, that glass is gonna break, if only in that area.

I think this is a good idea.

need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the
WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Its like bullet resistant glass made to stop 1 shot. But if one more hits it, it is gone.

IIRC the largest piece of armored glass was the 13" diameter window the ball turret gunner peered thru. Hardly enough to protect the gunner from cannon fire. He might survive 20mm HE rounds impacting the window, but the blast and shrapnel from rounds which didn't hit the window, but landed around him would rip him up badly.

As far as the other gunners, we're talking about poor souls sitting behind .032 aluminum & 1/4" plexiglass. How do you think they'd fare against your 20mm?

May not have killed him but it 1) put HIM out of commission (see him in the hospital bed?) and 2) made the gun position entirely useless (can't see, can't shoot).

End result is the same. Turret disabled. We already have that in-game.

If anything, turrets in AH don't get disabled FAST enough, because there are no gunners to kill. You have to hit the gun or a very small area right around them to do any damage. I'd love to see gunners behind the guns that present larger targets. Shoot them with API through the fuselage and they disable the turret maybe.

Thats what im saying, anything that goes above the damage of a 20mm, say you hit it twice, that would certainly be past the force of ONE 20mm.

You can see through the spaces untouched by the cracks, its enough to see, and that still means your operational, the only problem is that the bullet did screw your vision of the outside pretty badly.

You can see through the other glass just fine. You can't see through the cracked glass because between the laminated sheets it has shattered into millions of pieces.
