Really, audio tastes are as different as food tastes.
Ask yourself these questions:
What's my price range I'm happy with?
What am I using them for? (Studio work or just listening to music?)
How LONG will I be wearing them at a time?
How LOUD will I be listening.
Then go out and test-try as many as you can. Test-try them under as extreme conditions as the store will let you. NEVER buy a set of cans without having test-tried THAT specific pair first.
I did way too many years in radio (Top 40, then Rock and then Alternative & Talk formats) to admit to. I LOVED the Sony V6000 series, and a pair I bought 13 years ago still work perfectly. They ran me $120 back then. Mini plug screwed into a full stereo plug.
While you won't find that series available, I have never had Sonys let me down.
There were some decent AKG's out there, they reminded me of heavy Sennheiser's. Sennheiser's were GREAT for doing commercial imaging & production but were prone to feedback on the air.
Sony's were "tight" enough on your head to rarely feedback on the air, and I used them CRANKED UP.
(HUH??????) WHAT????)
Good Luck!
