Anyone have experience with AKG headphones?
« on: July 02, 2008, 07:02:40 PM »
AKG 271 Mk. II

I'm thinking about getting a 2nd headphone, this time it's for home/indoor use.
The other headphone I have is the venerable, industry-standard Sony MDR 7506.  Its portability allows me to use it in any outdoor activities.

Those Sony's cannot hold a candle to AKG's or Grado's.   I know several people with the 271's and they sing nothing but praise about them.

I'm looking at specs....  Reading more reviews....

AKG 271 have impedance of ~55.  Yay I can hook it up to my laptop/iPod.
But  why does it only have 200mW input power? My current  MDR 7506 has like 1000mW  :huh  I hope they won't blow up on me when I crank 'em up :P

MDR-7506 + Beyer DT-250 velour pads is hard to beat.  It's comfortable and good sounding for <$100
I think it's got mirror flat low-end to mid-high sound.  Problem is the highs would hurt for some people with ultra-sensitive ears.

Really, audio tastes are as different as food tastes.

Ask yourself these questions:

What's my price range I'm happy with?
What am I using them for?  (Studio work or just listening to music?)
How LONG will I be wearing them at a time?
How LOUD will I be listening.

Then go out and test-try as many as you can.  Test-try them under as extreme conditions as the store will let you.  NEVER buy a set of cans without having test-tried THAT specific pair first.

I did way too many years in radio (Top 40, then Rock and then Alternative & Talk formats) to admit to.  I LOVED the Sony V6000 series, and a pair I bought 13 years ago still work perfectly.  They ran me $120 back then.   Mini plug screwed into a full stereo plug.

While you won't find that series available, I have never had Sonys let me down.

There were some decent AKG's out there, they reminded me of heavy Sennheiser's.  Sennheiser's were GREAT for doing commercial imaging & production but were prone to feedback on the air.

Sony's were "tight" enough on your head to rarely feedback on the air, and I used them CRANKED UP.

(HUH??????)  WHAT????)

Good Luck!

I had sony mdr v600s. It was my first serious full-sized headphone.  I loved it and I thought i found the holy grail of all hearing devices.
Sadly it's no longer with me.  I accidentally sat on it, the plastic hinges broke beyond repair :cry

I replaced it with MDR 7506 pro + silky-smooth beyerdynamic DT-250 pads.

here's a sample (not mine but I have one similar to the picture)

AKG, Sennheiser and Denon makes some great sets but not all of their models are great within their pricerange. I would google the models you have shortlisted and see what reviews come up. My latest investment the Denon AHD-1001 are amazing and at only 180 grams they are light and comfortable to use over a long period of time plus you can walk around with them.

mg1942...my first great pair were sony v600.  Awesome cans.

My first pair lasted 9 years.  I used them on the air and then again at home on my ham radio.  VERY comfortable for extended time of listening.

Sadly, they are no longer made.  My V6000 series have lasted me 13 years.  That little black bag they give you to store them in is ok, but I made a denim bag 20 years ago that still is in great shape.

Sony still makes the V600s...  It's just ~$60 now.
