Do you think the government is holding out on you?
« on: July 04, 2008, 10:23:20 AM »
I was talking to a girl the other day about the presidential election and the candidates.
She was talking about our current president, the war - the economy, etc.

She immediately said "I can't wait until that dictator leaves and Obama wins, then we can finally relax"

I asked her what did she mean?

She honestly believes:  he will LOWER gas prices and has control of this, he will give us all much more money, and has control of this and people will all get along better.

I couldn't believe my ears.  So I asked her.  Do you think the government can print money and hand it out to us?
Her answer (for someone with a master's degree and working as a manager at a major corporation) was ABSOLUTELY shocking to me.

She said YES - the government has the ability to create more money and lower gas prices but they don't because they want all their greedy politicians and friends to get it all.

I couldn't believe my ears.

She had NO concept that the governments money was OUR money, money SHE paid into and that most of that money she paid into, she will never see.  I tried to explain this to her, but she just didn't understand it.

So my question to everyone is:  Do you think the government prints money and is the 'world bank'?  I have a feeling that the answer is going to be NO on these forums whereas most in here are intelligent.  However, I ask that you ask people this same question and post your responses in here.  I'm shocked that this is what is moving our country now days.  People like this that believe the government is a limitless entity that holds all the cards.

Sigh....what are we becoming..

EDIT: BTW I mentioned to her that the last two times we tried to force the oil countries to lower the prices , it backfired IE recently with the democrats threatening tariffs on products and in the 70's with the handsomehunk peanut farmer.  She of course, didn't hear about this on ABC.

She has a master's degree, works in management, and hasn't had any courses in economics?

You're assuming that just because a person supposedly has an education, they know what to do with it. I know a bunch of people who have all sorts of degrees, and are incapable of operating in the real world. Education and intelligence do not go hand in hand.

Pearl of wisdom from my father . . .

We were discussing something I had "learned" at university.  For the life of me, I can't remember exactly what.

My dad asked where I had heard such BS.  I said a professor's name.

"Guy sounds like an idiot."

"Dad, he has like three different doctorate degrees, one of them from Harvard."

"So, that makes him an educated idiot."

Just because a person has a degree does not mean they learned anything. They may also have done what my wife and I both observed at a major state university. Folks paying other folks to attend classes for them and take the tests for a better than average passing score. The person doing the paying didn't attend the classes, just paid for another person to do the work so they could party.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I have a theory I keep seeing proved right all the time.

There seems to be a trade off

The higher the education level. the lower the level of common sence.

Its like one erodes the other.

That would also help to explain Engineers and Architects.

Do you guys remember 1999 when the big Y2K scare happened?

We have more paper money out now, and still don't have enough of what it's representive of.

Our paper money is an   I. O. U.   $x amount in gold.

The worry was, and still is that people would/will start cashing in, and there isn't enough to go around, which would cause a major collapse of our economic system.

I'm not an economist, just your average joe sixpack, so what do i know.

Actually, our money is no longer a Gold Note.  It is Legal Tender.  The only thing backing it is the Federal Reserves word that it is worth something. :huh

you can't "cash in money", you can trade it for other stuff like beer, gas, fireworks, hotdogs.

True enough, but these are basic economic principles that she seems unaware of. These are the things you would expect a corporate professional to be somewhat familiar with.

You'd be amazed what corporate professionals are commonly not aware of. I know I have been, many times. I'm amazed some corporations are still in business.
