Cessna, Jodel, Kitfox...and more.
« on: July 09, 2008, 07:36:33 PM »
Been trying the stick of so many private planes for the last couple of years, and I seem to fall for the low wingloading.
Tried Airospetale Socata. Too sluggish, but stable
Tried Cessnas...nifty but don't perform nice enough
Tried Pipers...Cherokee % Arrow...stable and....sluggish.
Now getting beyond something that needs practically 60 kts for takeoff and hundreds of yards..
Tried a 95 hp Jodel model 1960 or so. A dream.....needed only some 100+ yds for takeoff and only wanted to fly....stallspeed some 40 kts with no flaps. There are none, just airbrakes.
Yesterday, a Kitfox with only 65hp (Rotax) ultra. No flaps, but trailing edge slats. Takeoff 50 yards or so, stall speed 28 English miles...
Very effective rudder, relatively light controls, slats make the turns a bit funny (pitchy) but stall....where is the stall???. Climbs, and flies....and lands....I was shocked with the quality.
Your thoughts?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

I mean...gas is expensive, and it's lovely to have a plane that just "hops" like that, ond once in the air, flies like at 90 miles while using very little fuel. And the handling was very nice!
65 hp that takes 2 men off on 50 yards of grass,,,,that is good!

Aircraft wish I could afford more than one. :cry I have been trying out different aircraft for 18 months and can't find the perfect one yet. Before gas prices went crazy I was looking at a Ptwin. 6 kids the wife and I make 8 not so small people. Now I am looking for a T210 only because I don't like the airlines and need to do traveling for my bussiness. The Kitfox is a wonderful small aircraft, the one I was around the prop turned reverse but a beautiful flyer and CHEAP. The little rotax burned very little. Wish I could get into one now. My Dad is building a Murphy Rebel, its his third build, next step up from the Kitfox. Have fun looking  :O I do. :salute

I haven't flown all that many aircraft personally, (Not powered anyway), mostly Cessnas, but my dad bought a Samba XXL Motorglider last year and Ive been flying that lately. Posted stall speed is something like 25 kts. I was doing 18-20 this morning full-flaps just fine. (There was a slight headwind, granted, but not much). Cruises at 120 kts, burns 4.5 gallons per hour, and has two 13-gal. tanks. It's posted range (Thought ive never tested this) is 1,000 miles. Climbs from 1000 fpm to 1500 fpm with a small rotax engine. Also has an 18:1 glide ratio with fully featherable prop. MISERABLE to land, an I mean I would rather try to land a cessna without ailerons than this thing sometimes, but when shes in the air shes a dream. I havn't really pushed her to the limits, (She has a balistic chute, but I dont have $130,000 to replace it if I break it) but today I really ran her dry. Got her up to 135 kts level at 150 ft, took off in what seemed like 8-12 yards and just had a part in the sky before I leave.

These are rough numbers and obviously wieght, alt, fuel quality, and weather play a big role, but it gets a little better than 8 gals/hr(aviat says 7.4..not mine) the other day fuel was about 7 bucks a gallon here(miami) so $56/hr. Again these are very rough numbers but should give you a good idea.
It has a 50 gal tank that in a perfect world will get you 980 miles. it cruises at 140 mph(120 knots). It will land and takeoff with in 550 ft(with a fat friend in back).

Oh dear, here the gas is almost two bucks per liter, so the low burning engines ae really worth something.
The kitfox would do some 8 litres for the hour I gues...so $16 is the guess.

$16....wow i could actually go somewhere  .......
My father has a really cool rotax powered seaplane(flying boat style). I know it has great performance numbers, I only flew it once but I know its really fuel efficient, plus you can land on water or land....I'll call him and ask what it is.
