39 Years Ago Today
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:38:57 AM »

The launch of Apollo 11.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Of all the urban legends this is one of my favorites.  If we hadn't gone wouldn't the Soviets called shenanigans on us?  On the other hand why don't they point the Hubble at the Sea of Tranquility and zoom in on all the trash we left up there and just end all the speculation?

Hubble doesn't have the resolution.

It is said that Hubble is based on keyhole spy satellites.  If spy satellites could read a licence plate at 200 mile altitude, (unlikely) that would be a 3" resolution.  The Moon is 250,000 miles, 1000 + times the distance.

3000" resolution is 250 foot resolution on the moon surface.  The LEM decent module is the biggest thing left behind and is on the order of 10 feet accross.

The laser reflectors left behind by all 6 missions can be detected however and have been reflecting reliably to get distance measurements.

THE defining moment of our era.

I've read that apart from the atomic bomb, the Saturn V launch was the loudest man made sound ever produced.
Do not attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence, fear, ignorance or stupidity, because there are millions more garden variety idiots walking around in the world than there are blackhearted Machiavellis.

N E V E R happened! This is actually an early secret test of the very missile Bush used to knock down the World Trade Center. It was built entirely out of endangered species and powered by a mixture of Freon-12 and the AIDS virus.

Wise up guys.

Pfft. Shows what you know!  I have, in fact, knowledge from a reliable source that the missile was hand built by enslaved Democrats in secret CIA sweat shops.  :D

Cool pic though!  :aok

Brilliant picture, thanks for posting it rpm.

To those who went to the Moon:   :salute  <S>

To those who believe man never set foot on the Moon:  I feel sorry for you, as you'll never feel any of the awe at what actually happened.
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?
Apparently I'm in the 20th FG 'Loco Busters', or so the legend goes.

Ironic considering the nickname he chose, no?
