I would like to fight over a globe instead of a square.
« on: May 18, 2001, 06:57:00 PM »
I don't know about the technical feasibility of this idea, but I think that it would be much more interesting if the MA were over a globe rather than a square.  It would dramatically change the atmosphere in the MA if there was no direction from which you knew the enemy wouldn't be coming.  It would also end the "off map" bomber and carrier hiding tactics because there would be no off map.  The mountain top snow texture could be used for the ice caps on the north and south poles.

No other flight sim has done this, AFAIK.

WWII was a global war, it would be nice to have the Rook vs. Knight vs. Bishop war be a global war as well.

What do you think guys?

HTC, is it possible?

It is round I tell you.

I propose to sail west to reach the east.

Once I have done this thing, you will all see and I will be hailed as a hero who saw the truth when others could not.

Wont work Karnak.

the world is only 512 miles x 512 miles.   For this area to to be a globe the circumference would be.....um.....not very much at all.   See, the Earth is 12,000 miles x 12,000 miles......if this world was stretched to fit we'd spend 3 days flying around just to find a target.

Swoop,
I know it would be a small globe, but I still think it would be better than the square we have now.

Given an area of 512x512 miles to work with, this equated to a sphere of radius of 288.86 miles.

The circumference of which is: 1815 miles (or thereabouts)

So it will take over 3 times longer to transverse the map than it does now.

Interesting idea though, except that considering most WW2 fights were at altitudes for which the Earth might as well be flat, it wouldn't be that useful.

How about just having different textures in different parts of the map? Desert for the middle, snow up north and down south.

<edit> Did anyone spot the...erm... 'deliberate' mistake in my calculation.

It wasn't feasible for the Germans to fly east to attack Britain.

Kind of a good idea, but it's actually realistic.  In the real world, you can't attack from all sides unless you go around the terrain you are attacking. This can be done for most bases on the map if you take the time.

Just make it "wrap around" like Asteroids.

BTW Adding curvature to the earth adds some complexity to the physical equations.

If the ma is never ending, the frontier of your country will be much more longer and it have to be protected by your country.
There won't be no "save" areas in the backlands and constant sneak attacks would penetrate the frontiers and hit your fabs and HQ.
The fighter would split up over the whole land.

Now we have limited lines of fire, where are always enough cons to be killed by  .

I am no historic freak.
If HTC would model a refigerator with the FM of the niki and the guns of the chog, I would fly it.
But AH should not be like a egoshooter or a sim like The Seddlers.

Finally, the Out-of-the-earth  Sputnik/Lancaster made true. I would agree if I could put them in geostationary orbit over Bish/Knit HQ

Cheers,

Karnak,
Get a tall stool to sit on while playing. Place a small globe under the stool when you load up AH. Violla!!!! You have your wish!!!

IMO adding curvature would mean that you wouldn't fly on a TC or map heading but RL life heading and maybe it would affect how storm fronts move across the AH landscape .Maybe even add some coriolis(spell) effect to the whole scheme there.

Ok if Global curvature is added then add magnetic lines, barametric pressure, solar flares, thermals, jet streams, high and low pressure zones, ice, hail, sleet, fog, and snow.

Let's make this game as real as possible.

My idea wasn't intended to be a "realism" feature.  I see that it is being taken that way though.

I intended it as a "neat, that's different and fun" type of idea.
