Tanks!
« on: August 31, 2008, 01:00:26 PM »
Hello everyone ,
I was recently talking to a friend in aces high , the greatest game ever invented , and he gave me a very interesting idea. He said that tanks in world war 2 had a zero degree turn radias on each track , meaning you can opperate each track seperately. Now you think of some of the things that could do to help. First of all , I like to have everything in this game completely realistic , so I think this would add to that. Second of all I also think that with a zero degree turn radias on the tanks , it would help you with , tigers for example , turning ur turret around asap when you have a panzerr tank sneeking up behind you. Considering its extremely slow slow turret. Or another example would be of bombs being dropped on you , if anyone knows what im talking about ,  sometimes the bomb your dodging from a fighter is behind you and falling down your way. Your pretty much dead. Just the other day this happend to me , the fight dropped at about 2 k in air so I had time to think of what I need to do. I saw bomb come straight down at me , and he leaded it perfectly , that I couldn't do anything. Had I had a 0 degree turn radias , I could do a U-turn , completely turn around then go straight , completely dodging the bomb. Now im sure there's a few more examples that could be used but I myself am out of them. Regardless , I think the main point is to have the option. Like b17s for another example. We have an option to work each engine seperately and each engines rpms. I use those quiet often. When i have 1 minute of gas left and im 3 secters away from base and cruising at 15k , I can kill the 1 and 4 engine and drop rpms on the others etc. Not all use it , most bail , but it's nice to have the option.

What do you all think ??

It's not worth it to do that. You can spin your turret faster than turning on your axis.

In modern tanks you have pivot steer as well as other gears.  You would be surprised how well some can power slide through a high speed turn.  It would be easier to implement your request like that.  FWIW, I don't think all ww2 tanks had pivot capabilities.

I use rudder pedals and GV's turn on a sixpence for me.  Have to be carefull of the flip over though.

Go in the pintle and steer from there with your twisty or A S D rudder keys.

They turn pretty well but lack pivot steer where one track goes forward and the other back.  The vehicle simply rotates around its CG.  It works pretty well in RL unless there is dirt or gravel under you.

I use peddals also , it wouldn't beat a zero degree turn radias. Its like AR234s for example , I can turn those basically in a 0 turn radias , working only 1 engine , kicking hard rudder and holding down left or right break depending on which engine is working. Thats turning maximum. Rather than just using my rudder peddals.

Ah yes....the ol pivot steer.......VERY useful to get the tank line in the motorpool perfectly straight.....Top wouldnt have it ANY other way!

wasnt the first 0-degree turn radius the panther? heard some where it was, which would make it pointless to put in game. to put it in game would be to ruin the realistic side of our low realism of gving... just my 2 cents

Works great until a pile of rocks gets under the roadwheels and prys the track off. Tanker bar and break track
