dunno about that...  I was raised in a conservative, Republican household and have pretty much always been opposed to big gov't liberals.  They haven't changed their tune all that much and I never supported their agenda, so what's to feel betrayed about?  It's the GOP that's abandoned it's traditional stance, that plays lip service to constitutional ideals and fiscal conservatism while, in practice, growing the fedgov as much, if not more so, than the opposition.  That's why I feel betrayed by the right...

Welp, here are a few facts I ran across a couple of weeks back that deal with teenage pregnancy.

Prior to the 1960s, the rate of illegitimate pregnancies for unmarried black girls was around 20%, while the rate for white girls of the same age was in the low single digits.

Enter the sexual revolution, with its notions of free sex, free love, sex education, free condoms, and contempt for the old moral beliefs and sexual mores.  Sex is everywhere, in books, magazines, radio, tv, and popular novels.  Our kids are inundated with it.  End result, pregnancy rates for unwed teenage girls have skyrocketed:  the 20% rate for unwed black girls is now at 70%, and that of unwed white girls is at 20%.

Crockett, while you may laugh at the teaching of abstinence, it at least harkens back to a time when such religious based sexual behaviors actually worked.  The more "modern" approach that you advocate has been an unmitigated disaster.

Yet in that same time period that you talk about, black people couldn't vote and had to use different rest rooms or sit in the back of the bus. It wasn't too long before that, that women couldn't vote and remember you surly wouldn't have found a women in the work force.. Their duty was to stay at home.

Guess what times have changed, we aren't the same people we were back then for either the good or the bad. With that reasoning you could very well say it's because there are few stay at hom,e moms these days. Using the very same reasoning you just used, we could turn around and say the fact Palin isn't a stay at home mom is the reason her daughter got preggo.

In short you can't cherry pick from one thing and claim it's because of this reason or that, sorry it just don't work like that because there is always another thing to blame.

actually, my "real enemy" is politicians who disregard the Constitution, regardless of what side of the aisle they sit on.  The right is just as selective about their adherence to Constitutional principles as the left is; they both support the Constitution if and when it supports their agendas.    I don't see Palin as a "huge step" in the right direction.  A tiny step, maybe, but give her a few years in Washington and I'm sure she'll look less libertarian to ya.  Bush "sounded" libertarian from time to time, what with his "no nation building" rhetoric...  How'd that turn out for us? 

I'm not "mean and glum" because Ron Paul's out of the race, it's because the GOP has lost it's way and I don't see that changing any time soon.  I voted Libertarian prior to RP's candidacy, the GOP had a chance to get my vote back but apparently they don't want it.  Unlike you, I'm not satisfied with a party who's walking instead of running towards socialism, my political agenda doesn't begin and end with opposing the "liberal left".  I support freedom and the Constitution and would relish the opportunity to support a major party candidate who shares my ideals.  Until then I'll waste my vote how I see fit, hoping against all hope that someday the GOP will return to it's limited-government roots.

The answer to your last question is obvious.  Abstinence is a 100% effective means of birth control (when it's practiced) and deserves just as much attention as teaching safe-sex does.  Choosing to promote one over the other based on one's ideology does a disservice to those who's actions we're trying to influence.
