Not trying to be stupid, but could you enlighten me? I was 7 at the time, so I didnt really keep up with the news...

USS Cole was attacked in-harbor by a suicide bomb equipped small boat.

Oh, I remember when that happened. I didn't really remember the date though.

The Russians are just trying to incite nationalistic pride into their nation of people all yearning to get as far away as possible from the evils of Moscow.  Putin just screwed up awfully big this time.  The amount of economic damage that this little charade cost him is going to far out weigh the value of S. Ostettia being separate from Georgia.

Normally, I'd think so too, Bodhi, but the last I saw of it on the news, the Euros' don't wanna even threaten to boot Russia out of the Big 8 anymore, because Russia supplies something like 30% of their oil and 25% of their gas. As far as trade with the U.S. goes...I don't know if we have a large share of the Russian market in anything.

Besides that Russia is nextdoor to Europe and there's no mountains or large body of water between. However, most of the commodities in Russia come from Europe. Natural resources are also as good as the money it brings in, therefore Russia can't really put up with Europe either or they'll run short on money.

Keep in mind that most of Europe was also against the war in Iraq (by now you should know why), but the USA wasn't sanctioned. Nothing was done. So why should Georgia be any different? Not to forget that Georgia is right nextdoor to Russia unlike Iraq with their imaginary WMD.

From what I've come to understand, they are now doing pretty good with petro-dollars.
