I don't like the "if you don't have anything to hide, why care?" attitude.

It's the same attitude used to justify those out-of-uniform unwarranted police break ins in the middle of the night...then the guy shoots a cop thinking he was a criminal and goes to jail for it.

Right on mensa.  The attitude you speak of has been explained to me in detail by those who used to live in the Soviet Union.

Half of those things you list are charges, not convictions.

Remember, the oath of office is to defend and protect the constitution, not the American people, or the government, or anything else.

So they allegedly did those things, until they get convicted in court.

How many of those terrorist plots were foiled by sifting through all the world's emails, or tapping cellphone networks?

Versus how many were uncovered by good field work, and agent contacts?

How do you know they will be convicted?  In this country all men are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, thank you very much.

It's scary to me how much some people want to bypass the law, due-process, and the constitution, or at the very least water them down, when it is precisely these things that define our western way of life.  They are the things that are worth dying for.

It's alleged until they get convicted. That is fact. If they get found innocent then it is also no longer alleged. Then well...they get to go free, but until then, their crimes are alleged. How you came to the conclusion that I want to bypass due process is beyond me. Unless.....you only saw what you wanted to see.

Sorry, your statement seemed to suggest that it was a sure thing that they'd be convicted, as otherwise there's no justification to thump our chests over having apprehended them.

If I got that wrong then my bad.

Half of those things you list are charges, not convictions.

Remember, the oath of office is to defend and protect the constitution, not the American people, or the government, or anything else.

Actually, the entire oath is as follows:
Quote
Each president recites the following oath, in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I point this out to underscore that the President's duties go beyond simply protecting the Constitution.  They also include protecting US citizens from threats both foreign and domestic, negotiating treaties, commanding the armed forces of the United States, and inforcing the law of the land, to name but a few.  So your statement here is not correct.

First, you're picking out only one oath of office.  Second, "faithfully executing the office of president" is fairly open ended, and should be expected by definition.  I fail to see how your interpretation of it invalidates my claim that defending the constitution is primary over all the other things you list.  It's the only specific duty in the oath, after all.

What's the difference?

Surveillance is a key component to good investigative field work.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.
