A question of politics.....
« on: October 20, 2008, 09:08:59 AM »
I can understand HTC's position about discussing politics... You get "those right wing republicans vs. those left wing democrats"

Now my question is...does this apply to present day "domestic" politics (being a Canadian explains the quotes) or all politics?

For example....can historical politics be discussed...i.e. How could Hitler get elected?
                                                                          FDR's New Deal?
How about economics? We all know what's happening on Wall Street. Can that be discussed or does the government intervention make it verboten?

Can we worry about Iran here? Does that fall under foreign policy or world events?

Just wondering about where the paramaters are.

I would think that your question would be be better recieved by pm'ing pyro and asking directly.

i could be wrong but the new policy is to not discuss any politics or religion since it inevitably leads to a flamefest. just look at all the locked threads. no matter how innocent the original posters comments were it degenerates rather quickly. People here are very passionate about their views and a few go WAY overboard
Crap now I gotta redo my cool sig.....crap!!! I cant remeber how to do it all !!!!!

Never thought about PMing Pyro but then again.....the discussion of parameters should be there to inform all.

discussions about the present election...well, yeah....make your own discision...no need for that here....
But can we talk in a historical perspective? Economics? Is world events yeah, or nay?

I'm trying to get clarification here, not confrontation.

It's one thing to have strong views, it's another to make personal attacks, which is what inevitably happened every thread.

Skyrock's thread about the inquisition showed that historical events from hundreds of years ago can still be polarizing.  Still, I can't imagine a flame fest starting over politics in ancient greece, e.g. the execution of Socrates, or the Peloponnesian War, but you can't underestimate some the members here.

It'd prolly get locked as soon as one guy got into a fit for whatever reason. Which has already happened with historical discussion of warbirds.  So historical politics probably would be at least as likely to inflame, e.g. Boroda syndrome.

Ridlely, the O'Club has been at times a bad forum.  It got so bad that a couple years ago HTC closed it.  As long as it's a place for flame warriors to flex their keyboards, it's a no go.

The question really is where to find the dividing line between history and politics. But ultimately the problem for the administrators wasn't so much the actual discussion of politics but the manner in which it was discussed. People went too far. I usually enjoyed the give and take of the O-Club. But before the ban it just got stupid.  So I avoided most of the threads on the issue. That option wasn't open to the mods. They took action.

Now some are whinging about the 'loss of freedom'. But this isn't a free country. It's the bulletin board of a private company. You either play nice or you'll be asked to leave. That's what happened.

I personally like to discuss politic and religion without being flamed. That is why I liked this site so much. People could have a debate on touchy topics and the kids that jumped in and started flaming would be PNGed. Leaving the more mature people to the boards.  :salute mods

In general I would agree with this statement.
But also in all honesty. I've rarely seen anything argued any more intensely then even in the general discussion forums.

In some aspects IMO it's been worse there. Which is why I dont read or post there often anymore.

The ban in general also IMO is going to be impossible to enforce in the long term.
Simply because so much of what is discussed have such close ties to politics.
Many subjects will just naturally flow into that.

Perhaps a different method of Modding would be more effective (inasmuch as the current methods have worked so well LOL)

As for loss of freedoms.
It can be argued.against (though not here) the legalities of your statement.
There certainly may be legal precedent to challenge it.

Personally I wouldnt.
I happen to generally like the folks that run this show even though as is the case now I may not always be in complete agreement with them.
So I'd rather not take it to that level.
Plus its really not worth my time and aggravation
And I really would rather not take up that much of their tie and aggrivation that could be better spent developing the game
Thirdly.
The end result I think would be undisireable for all.
that being. the whole BBS shebang. Goes bye bye

So I would suggest nobody else try it either..

If you're saying there was less flaming here than at other boards, you've given me a big reason not to even consider joining a more general bbs for political discussion.  50% of what passed for discussion here was invective, chest thumping, and all-around bellicosity.  Geico could've used some of the more prolific posters in their latest ad campaign.
