River deltas
« on: October 29, 2008, 10:29:21 AM »
I was curious to see if the latest version of the terrain editor had fixed the river deltas. On the previous version they did not show up at all unless you applied mrmidi's fix. So I deleted mrmidi's shp files, rebuilt the terrain and exported it to the game's terrain directory.

The deltas look fine in the editor but as you can see from this screenshot, not in the game itself. I then tried deleting a couple of deltas and replacing them but this made no difference. Can someone confirm that they are still bugged, or have I screwed up somehow?

They are still a problem.

Thinking maybe they were prepped for water above 0 alt, I even tried tilting them a little. That didn't work either.

In that screen shot it looks like it was built with improper properties, either that or the terrain's game cache wasn't cleared.
Easy in-game again.

I am not on my map making computer now, but the default deltas (but re-textured, just changed the sea) work fine on my map.

In game and in TE.

Greebo,
does that happen only once in a while, while viewing from certain angles, or is the light blue constant?

If it is an occasionally seen glitch, it might be something similar we had already in Karelia terrain. There may be some object origos that touch the grid lines or even cross over the next square. Cannot remember exactly though, what caused the problem and how it was solved.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Its a constant problem seen from any angle, no flickering. I remember clearing out the TE cache but I'm not sure if I cleared the game one, I'll try that. The deltas are set to groupmaster, with can collide and set to terrain alt ticked and everything else as default. I'll also try moving a delta into the middle of a square to see if its an edge problem.

BTW has anyone from HTC actually said if rivers are permitted in an MA terrain yet?

Funny you should ask because I just asked about a different CT item today.

I wouldn't add anything intended for CT to an MA terrain yet because, "they may not only be incomplete but they may also be subject to radical changes".

Something else I noticed from your screenshot, and it could just be the angle it was taken but...

The rivers currently have the same 0 elevation requirement as water. Your river appears to go up hill.

They look fine in the TE. It's when they are built and flown in-game that they don't look right.

I have the same problem with them and that was on a fresh terrain with no cache involved.

Yes, its not the cache and I also tried putting a delta in a square with no adjacent land but that makes no difference either. The rivers are at 0 feet BTW.

I guess I could get rid of the rivers from the terrain and finish it like that. They break up the endless green monotony of the terrain nicely though. Also having a few places where GVs have to cross bridges is an interesting gameplay addition. Its stuff like that and the mountain textures that gives me the incentive to do the work, making it look and play differently to other MA terrains.

I like the rivers Greebo. Wish there were more of them. Any possibility of adding bridges that can be destroyed?

The last time I played with the ones in the TE they were indestructible and you couldn't pass underneath without dying or engines blowing.

Not for the MA because of the MA restrictions policy but yes, working bridges are available in the TE. LVTs can't pass under them though.

There is one airfield per country on my terrain that has a spawn point on the other side of a river. Enemy GVs have to cross one of four bridges to reach the airfield. The bridges belong to the owners of the airfield and so cannot be bombed to prevent the enemy GVs crossing. There's not much point for the attacking side to bomb them of course.

If they were bombable from the defending field I figured you would get milk runners constantly bombing them for points as they are only a mile or so away.

There appear to be so many problems with rivers and bridges though, I'm coming to the conclusion that the only way this terrain will ever get accepted is if I ditch them altogether.
